Do people know what you do?

"I make websites"

I told somebody this once and their response was, "so where do you wait tables?" They argued with me for a minute and found it really hard to believe that someone could make their living online.

I tell them I'm in marketing and advertising. Every time I mention SEO, the Internet, or just Lead Gen, I get glassy-eyed stares. I was dating a girl forever who wanted me to have a "real career," until one of her best friends started co-running a CPA network. She still didn't get it, but her friend has an MBA from Harvard, so she figured I must be onto something.

LOL. It's funny they couldn't believe it's possible to make money online. Did you ask them if they ever heard of a small company named Google?

Oh well, let them live in the dark. More money for us..

I tell them I make websites, too. Then they ask me how I make money making websites, and I try to explain affiliates and Adsense and whatever, and they nod blankly and then start talking about their hair or something.

I simply tell people that it is my job to make them buy things they do not need with money they do not have.

Then they leave me the f alone....#winning

I tell them "Internet marketing", they ask "what's that?", then I say "we have about 70 websites that sell stuff to people".

They usually respond with something like "how 'bout dem [football/baseball team] ?"
Then I respond "hmm, I don't follow hockey much these days."

People think the web is a joke coz its inanimate.

Not sure so much nowadays, but 10 years ago, definitely. Had people politely saying my business was shit, because they couldn't see it -- I didn't have work trucks, an office building, shop, or whatever. Had employees, but only met them a few times a week, instead of having an office. I think alot of it was just jealousy though. "Well, he might make really good money, but it's not a REAL business, so it doesn't count!", type of thing.

Don't get that much anymore though. Probably because I currently live in Thailand, so I just tell people I work on the internet, and they get too confused to ask any further questions.

That opens you up to "help" requests from all of the people that "need a website" but can barely use a computer.

"Our projects start at $4500 including about 10 pages of content with graphics, would you like to set up an appointment to get started?"

What a topic. This is something that troubles me since the very same day I started making money online. When I was making cents, family and friends thought I didn't work and wasn't looking for one. When I truly began making money they believed I was doing some shady stuff.

I can see that most of us, successful or not, have some serious issues getting some real life positive reputation.

I guess that the only day people that I meet will change their minds about me will be the day I hire other people, even if it's for shady stuff.

If we had an important job working for a mining or oil company that profit from ruining the ecosystem people would respect us a lot more, which tells a lot about how damn stupid humans are in general.

Don't tell anyone what you do. Except maybe your girlfriend or best friend.

But when it comes to friends and family forget it.

They either think you are running a scam, try to talk you into going back to college, want you to show them a step by step blueprint, etc.

I just tell people I design websites. Boring enough to where the questions dont go any further.

Yea when I talk about the internet I believe others give me no respect. But I actually have a brick and morter business. But the whole thing is ran through the internet. People dont understand it is a website biss. It would be the same if I was doing affiliate. Lol I dont know what makes me want to prove others wrong lol
