Do you block Chinese traffic?

I realized that in my 6+ years in IM, I never made any sale/conversion or even got a single decent lead from China... ever, regardless of the niche. The only thing I get from that country is spambots, hackers, blackhatters and other BS. Yesterday some fuckers from "China Unicorn Beijing" completely crashed one my accounts with thousands of spambot connections and made me realize that I should perhaps consider blocking the entire country...

Do you guys block Chinese traffic? What's the best way/plugin to do this on WP sites? I heard once that geo-blocking is not accurate and can end up blocking some legit traffic...
 


From a NetSec point of view, fuck the Chinese.

.htaccess block their entire range. Install WordFence if you are using WP to make it really easy.

I encourage anyone on this forum to install kippo on a box and then check your logs after 24 hours. Fuck. China.

Depending on the site I block certain countries. I would recommend taking a look at Cloudflare. You can captcha or block certain countries and you also have a pretty nice web firewall to filter out bullshit traffic. It's really easy to use too, just point your DNS there. There are also other nice things you can do with it like Flexible SSL, page caching, etc, etc. You can also easily see which countries are producing the shitty traffic so you easily know which to block.

sounds like there is flaws in your security, should address those rather than banning a whole country as a solution
 
I block all of the suspect countries. You can do it with htaccess and ip ranges, or you can use cloudflare or incapsula, by just selecting the countries that you want to block.
 
Can one of you server config experts chime in on this? I utilize shared hosting, and was considering blocking malicious countries via htaccess using something like this:

But expanding the list to include every country east of the iron curtain. If I have an incredibly large htaccess file to block all these ip block ranges, what kind of performance hit could I expect to see, if any, on my legitimate traffic?
 
You can also do this on a cpanel/whm server with CSF & MaxMind.

It does affect performance if you block a ton of countries as that's a LOT of IPs to cross-reference on EACH RESOURCE you host hit.

I think we blocked about half-dozen, and our load actually went DOWN due to bot traffic. This will depend on the site(s) you have on your server too.

You can also do it in Apache w/MaxMind too. Integrate into your software with maxMind owned or api, etc...

Chinese government does not discourage them? It commands them! They hack movies for fun, their work is to hack R&D servers of EU and US corporations, so that China can create the exact copy of your new gadget\device or use your latest research - but do it 10 times cheaper.

Embrace the reality, China prefers to steal instead of buying and nobody can do anything with it.
