Do you listen to music while programming?

I am fairly new to programming (outside of MATLAB anyway), but I have been spending a lot of time on some projects lately and these are the most listened to songs on my itunes this month in this order. They are quite diverse in genre, so you might find some great songs you've never heard if you follow the YouTube recommendation chain.

I never considered listening to music while working, I thought it would be distracting and I suppose if I were listening to Grinderman at full blast it might be. But listening to some of the music posted in this thread while doing work that doesn't required 100% concentration (e.g. client reports) is actually quite helpful.
Thanks.

Thanks.

Headphones + music (no lyrics/vocals) = helps me block out distractions. I find that I can maintain 99% focus for about 50-70 mins before I have to take a break. I only need 3-4 "sessions" a day to get loads of work done (used to spend 8-12 hours/day "working" and struggling to stay focused).

I second the need for trance tracks. They are necessary when coding for extended periods of uninterrupted time.

Like everyone pretty much linked you need electronic music.

The repetitive nature of it and the lack of lyrics helps you concentrate.

I use Spotify right now and tend to listen to a lot of Chillstep type of music.

The link right above by boatburner is pretty spot on.

I also listen to all the "bands" that (O_o) listed for programming and are part of my Chillstep playlist.

spotify is on all the time. I actually pay for it so I can use it on my phone as well

for under $100/year I dont even bother to download music anymore, most of what i want is right there at my finger tips legally

when I want HQ audio, then I skip spotify

No I don't listen to music while programming. I am generally more focused in a quiet environment.

Can't program
Can't afford music
Listen to the jingling of the coins in my cup while I work

Fuck yes. Found this album last week, it is the shit:

Koan - When The Silence Is Speaking [Full Album] - YouTube

Otherwise I use Songza. It has playlists based on your activity or mood, and with that it keeps in mind that vocals can be distracting. There are TONS of instrumental playlists for any genre that you might be interested in, which usually keep me focused best.

+1 for songza. first i've used the site. i dig being able to search through music without disrupting the current track.

Glad you're enjoying it, I like that feature too - I also like that I can choose my mood and let it go. I like having a soundtrack to my life!

Game soundtracks are my favorite - the Halo station on Pandora will keep you occupied for a few days and then it gets repetitive.

di.fm is good for electronic

I just listen to white noise sometimes, if I am having trouble getting into what I am doing.
