Does PPC effect SEO in terms of organic rankings in Google?

For example, take a strong 100% whitehat site that gets good organic traffic and has some nice rankings. If you were to push PPC traffic to existing pages and create new landers to drive PPC, would Google:

  1. Discount your site because they consider you a "merchant", with the assumption that making a sale - not providing quality content - is your #1 priority?
  2. Push your organic rankings further down the rankings so you continue to promote via PPC instead of being ranked #1 and being happy with your placement for the keyword/term?
I've done some PPC on established domains but I'm a bit nervous to make an all out attempt in fear of a Big G Organic pummeling... and that's my #1 source of traffic. I'm also worried that my domain will somehow someway get the middle finger by QS, min bid will go through the roof and I can never do PPC on the domain again. Keep in mind it's a long-term, 100% whitehat site.

Discuss.

(Your name is visible in the poll because I'm really curious to see what the opinion of "trusted" WF members are, and how they might differ.)

Google would be killing their own business model if they penalized people essentially for giving them money.
Beyond that, a lot of newspapers and whatnot chase traffic with PPC. Plus sites like amazon that spend insane amounts on PPC, and perform insanely well in the serps.

Edit: I'd also say that any perceived benefit is more likely a result of organic links the person may have gotten from the increased traffic.

Yeah, what he said ----->xmcp123

PPC won't affect your rankings in any way.

But if you're gonna try PPC, dont just send people to your home page. set up landing pages that are very targeted (unless you are just doing a branding campaign and want to get more awareness of your site, sending to HP won't be so bads then, but still, think if a unique LP on your site would help "sell" it)

Honestly, I SEO before I PPC. I at least make sure I'm indexed before
firing up a campaign.

As far as your question is concerned, I couldn't really say,
but I doubt Goog has any ties between SEO & PPC. That seems like it
would kill of alot of there Advertisers (and lazy businesses for that matter).

The only way it would help you would be if the people driven to your site via ppc then went and linked to you through a blog post or forum or similar.
