a good friend of mine has run a fairly successful ecommerce site for the last few years. the name of her site is a very strong marketing phrase that has a lot of potential applications.

anyway, some "domain appraisal" firm appraised her domain for something like $4,000,000 or $6,000,000.

My (i'm sure completely ignorant) question: Is there ANY way in hell for her to realize the revenue from this domain or are domain appraisals just a bunch of crap?

Thanks!

For the most part, they are crap. It is only worth what someone is willing to pay. If it get's a lot of type in traffic, that is a different story because it can be instantly monetized without having to worry about trying to get traffic.

Agreed. I highly doubt her domain is worth $6 million or even $4 million. Very few domains are worth this much. And I doubt that she has any on them. Most of these domains were snatched up along time ago. Not to long ago the domain Vodka.com sold for $3 million. You could check dnjournal to get a feel of what big money domains have been selling for.

Has she tracked how may type-ins the domain gets?

Thanks for the advice, all.

I'm not sure that she does track type ins, though I can find out. I guess the problem with this is that there is a retail store operating on the domain right now, so people could be typing in the name to find the store...but I'll look into it.
