Domains: Just .com or Do You Use .info & .net?

Hey all,

I'm about to buy a domain in a pretty competitive niche. .com domains are often taken for the keyword-rich domains I want. Is it worth it to get a .net or .info with a great domain, or should I get a slightly longer domain that's still .com. Have y'all found that this makes a difference in terms of how people view your site? Thanks for the feedback!

It's depends on the branding and the budget on traffic i guess. If you going to develop a domain by spending lots of money on it, it's a smart move to buy around the domains before squatters do it. I mean, .com .net .info or even other tlds are smart. with .com you should go for wwwdomain.com also. If you have a three word generic domain for the example, like insanehitzpost.com then buying insane-hitz-post.com is a smart move, because there are evil people who takes your MSN serps.

What are your opinions on country specific TLD's?

Anyone have experience ranking them, do they generally rank easier for the country you're targeting? I imagine the downside is they rank less well for other countries?

I bought a few .us domains that I thought had good kw/competition ratio, only starting out though, so that's why I ask.. :)
 
I used to use the .nets when the .coms were not around and I really wanted it but now I've moved up in the world and if the .com isn't availble I snatch up the .ca
 
FYI - I've actually seen Matt Cutts publicly dis .info's, but I guess they have their place on cyberspace too.

O Rly? I've never thought about doing that. Do .ca's show up in American SERPs just as easily a .com's?
 
I use .info because I'm a cheap ho.

But then again, who gives a fuck if it's .com or .info -- as long as it's making you monies.
 
it's amazing what a .org and a well designed/thought out site/header will do in terms of 'legitimacy' for a site. If you're running a "WARNING---......" type ad- this is well worth trying.

So Far I haven't had any trouble getting the .ca's indexed and ranking for USA, and/or Canada traffic.

However you have to have a business or be a Canadian citizen to register a .ca and you have to register with CIRA, minor overhead for lots of good domains, 9 times out of 10 I usually find that when everything else is taken for a term I want my .ca is still there (For some reason it doesn't seem like there are too many Canadian Domainers haha)

The .info's however, fuck I swear I just have bad luck with them, I don't think I ever actually got one of those indexed properly haha.
 
Mostly .com's but it depends on what I'm running. .net, .org & .info all have their uses. Basically what Amanda said, whatever actually makes monies.
 
Rough estimates according to my Namecheap pie chart:

30% .com
25% .net
25% .org
10% .us
7% .info
3% .me

But I also have a few .sc with Domain Site. If I'm doing paper click, I stick with dot com. Other than that, I don't give a fuck what the TLD is as long as it has my keywords in it.

I've also found .ca domains to index and rank well in Google. The added advantage if you register it as a Canadian citizen, the whois information must be kept private. When this practice first came out last year I talked with CIRA and they stated (whether this is true in practice or not is another question) that even domain registrars (such as Google) are not permitted to access the whois information.

Although more difficult to get good domain names, .de domains have also worked well in most cases.
 
It depends. I've bought 1000s of .infos when they are on 99 cent sales and found a lot of good Kw names. But I mostly use those for cashflow blogs and some niche sites and have no expectation of using it for PPC or for domain investment.

IMHO, get .coms if you are investing in names, expecting type-ins, or throwing a lot of money into branding or focusing on a few things. But I have ranked .infos and everything else naturally with no problem. I don't know if it affects PPC, as that's not my thing. But if others say it does, it probably does.
