Downloading programs For Your Car?

it depends on the car make/model .. for some makes there simply isn't anything available for enthusiasts/consumers. vw/audi owners are lucky to have a sweet software for their cars: Ross-Tech: Home
lol you can't change gear ratios with a computer. You can change shift points probably in some cars.
you can change everything that is controlled electronically, such as speed limiter, sensor inputs, ignition timing, etc etc
but usually it requires a commecrical grade program such as autotap and a laptop with interface cable or a complete unit like hypertech ( i think that's what it's called ).
If you want to make your car faster, it won't work. You might gain a few HP, but nothing major. The purpose of those tweaks is to adjust the engine properly after doing hard modifications, such as cam swap, nitrious, or putting a set of new heads

I am not looking to tweak my car but rather a better understanding of the electronics and computer settings within todays newer more sophisticated cars.

It looks like they sell new computers for cars, i wonder if any site has created programs to download instead of buying a whole new computer. Those things cost like $200-$500.

you can find an enthusiast forum for your own car and I guarantee you there are guys who can point you in the right direction on those forums
