Dual Monitors Bad For Eyes?

Screw the monitors, that carpet is fucking with my eyes right now...

Uber: What the others are saying about width is pretty accurate. I've got dual 24" going as well and until I started making 4 windows, and tiling them horizontally across so that they were each a half screen wide column, it really fucked me about when reading.

When you're doing graphic work, dual wide screens is awesome. Look from one to the other while you're working. When you're reading though, the bigger the screen, the worse it is.

Don't just sit in the middle of the two screens (like most people do with smaller screens) This will give you HUGE eye strain. Sit directly in front of one screen and have the 2nd 30 on the side. I dunno exactly why... but this reduces strain big time.

I was just going through the process of setting my new 24" samsung up in portrait mode and this advice is totally solid. I switched from being lined up with the crease between the monitors to facing the portrait and having my laptop off to the side, and it's far better.

Thanks for the tip.

btw, reading and typing long sales copy isn't comfortable on dual 30's for extended periods of time. I use my macbook pro for that kind of stuff.

Dual 30's are good for pumping campaigns with Chinese factory speed.

I just use leopard to make separate spaces for everything on my mac pro + two 30's setup.

Space 1 - I use this as a research and planning space. With a tabbed notepad application for OSX called jNotes. I have all my research tools and networks opened up to quickly cross match different things and take notes on which campaigns i will do next. I keep my IM on this space.

Space 2 - campaign building space. Finder, photoshop, dreamweaver, ftp and browser are all open at once on the duel 30's. I don't have aim or any other useless distractions on this space. This way im 100% focused on building whatever i just started.

space 3 - vmware running XP and some other virtual machinse i use as robots/macros

space 4 - optimization space - I have excel, different propser windows, calculator and wtvr platform i am optimizing open... all at once.

all i know is that i had 20/20 vision until i started doing this for a living.
Now i wear contacts.

Holy...
The right-half is very similar to my setup. Macbook Pro + Desktop dual monitor.
But in my case, I don't wanna add more ... it's bad for my brain :p.

I uploaded a pic of my setup so you can see what i mean by having one 30 on the side. Btw samsung 30's are better then the apple screens.

I know what you guys mean by increased productivity with dual big monitors because now that I have it at work I see the diff when working on my campaigns but when come home to work on campaigns on my 17" laptop dont have any motivation lol soon soon soon ill have the 30"s

2 x LG 22" (W2242TQ)

I am web designer and programmer. It feels like my productivity went up 300%.
Previously, I had wasted a lot of time switching between windows.

The LG has contrast ratio of 8000:1. I have them both set to darkest. Most of
the time, I have the secondary monitor turned off.

I have an AutoHotKey macro I use to move Windows around. I can quickly send
a window from one monitor to the next. I also added a hotkey that shrinks the
window between the default monitor widths: 1280, 1024, 800, 640. For example,
I always set my browser to 1024.

The monitors are plugged into an Nvidia 9800GTX OC+ in my custom built
computer. It's running on Intel Quad Core Q6600.

With the virtual machines and macros, does each have its own mouse pointer?

What robots/macros are you running?

Look up vmware. Each machine runs just like a native install. With a mouse and the same graphical interface.

If you're worried about eyestrain, try to place your desk next to a window with a view (at right angles to the window to avoid glare / dazzling ). Then get into the habit of looking out of the window now and again. Use an alarm if you have to remind you.

I told my optometrist I spend 14-16 hours a day on a computer on average, and she said there wasn't any link between deteriorating vision and looking at monitors. I still have perfect sight and I've been doing this for as far back as I can remember. The only thing that I'm having a hard time correcting is not having a slouch.. sometimes I'm in my car and I have to remind myself like 10 times to sit straight, because I just keep morphing into my bad posture.

Pretty much how I sat for the last 15 years..
