Duplicate content penalty

Ok, I read something different every day about this. Duplicate content across domains is apparently bad. Within the same domain, I have definitely read from the Google's mouth that this is not an issue. Across domains, however, I hear there are penalties.

However, today I read in the 30 day challenge (module 3, day 4) transcripts that the backlinks are still counted, so there's not really a penalty. Google just picks the most authoritative site.

And I feel like I've read something similar elsewhere.

Now, the only issue I can see there is that if you are trying to rank for a particular KW and you have duplicate content everywhere, Google's pick of "most authoritative" will probably be some other high PR place your content was duplicated on, which would cause you not to get the site you're really trying to rank for on top.

Any thoughts here guys?

Right, I also meant to mention that I can't imagine that duplicate content is okay given how popular and seemingly accepted-practice article spinning is.

Duplicate content is "okay," it's just not optimal and it's not going to rank you very highly. Lots of sites have duplicate pieces of content on them. Things like product specifications or the manufacturer's description get repeated tens of thousands of times across the internet. The sites that don't get penalized have unique content around the duplicated stuff.

In general, I think it's better to think of there being a unique content bonus -- Google and other search engines simply favor content that seems relevant that is original to your site.

to some extend, Google does NOT penalize your site for having duplicate content. Google understands the reasons for duplicate content and services like newspapers and magazines have done this for a very long time. They also realize that duplicate content can sometimes be out of your control. :frenchman:

True. But still more original and well written = more great it will be on google's eyes.

Probably will matter more about the quality of this content nowadays. Ive never seen this "duplicate content penalty" with any of my sites or anyones sites that i know.

I would call it more like a filter with duplicate content. "the others" domains or content just have way less ranking power if its considered duplicate by g.

Duplicate content sucks over real content, but come on did I really need to tell you that?

IMO its not going to destroy your site if youre linking with DC but it aint gunna be no way near as good as UC linking to you.

If someone copies your content and they push enough link juice to it, they'll outrank you with it, but it's not really something to worry about. It doesn't happen *that* much.
