I remember once I bought some beggar kids some KFC. They asked for cash for food, instead I told them they can get some nuggets or whatever it was. Surprisingly they agreed... Honestly spoken, those kids were really poor and weren't dressed like most other kids. Dunno about you, but the smile on their faces after getting some fried chicken was well worth the $10 I spent.
Real poor beggars will be happy about anything you help them out. Personally I feel like giving them a tenner in foods and getting a smile back is a good approach, much better than giving them cash and seing them buying drugs on the corner...

Easy way to do this and remove 80% of the shame is to get some crutches, buy a large box of roses and sell them at a 500%+ markup. Have a good story on hand. Dress very poor. You could probably pull some serious guapamole that way.

When I lived in Bangkok there used to be this guy with no lower legs who would lie on his stomach with a cup for money. He would start his day at the far end of the Skytrain stations, then during the day be seen in two different tourist locations far from each other. Rumors had it, his wife drove him around in a Mercedes. I honestly believe it. Just watching him for 10 minutes and tourists would give him all kinds of money. I also heard stories about children being rented for the day as they get much more money. Begging is pretty good business seriously.
