An oldie but goodie:
Pretend you are deaf. Go into a coffee shop hand out cards saying you are deaf and need money to buy books or some shit like that.
First pass drop the cards, second pass collect donations. Nice and quiet, if somebody starts yelling at you, you can ignore them because you are deaf get it?
Another scam is to get workboots and a hardhat and walk around saying you need bus money to get to a construction site.
