Set 30 minutes of your day aside to watch this video. This is a presentation by David Heinemeier the creator of Ruby on Rails. He talks about being successful internet based businesses. Most of us already know what he talks about in this video, but it will help to clear your mind and maybe focus your efforts a bit more.

Great video. I like his humorous side towards building a business and keeping things simple. Nice little reminder and refresher for all the workaholics that try too hard like me haha.

Thanks for the video.

Very nice.

Simple concepts that we all should already know, but the way he explains it really got me fired up.

He's a smart guy obviously, that was an incredible speech.

I really like the fortune 5000 and small italian restuarant type of references.

"They're selling fucking shoes" haha.

Thanks for sharing.

Wow. I liked that speech so much I clapped at the end with the crowd...heh.

I've watched a few of his videos about rails.... this was better. It's worth watching - especially if you are trying to make the next youtube :)

Slow at first, but I was really glad I watched it all the way through, great video to keep perspective.

I agree with many of the principles he discusses, and honestly if you didn't already know most of that stuff, you are behind. Internet business is definitely a new thing but its still business in the traditional sense. It works the same way as business always has, except through a different medium. It helps to get away from the internet sometimes so that you can think outside the box and figure out how online business fits into the real world.

And just to play devil's advocate, here is an article from Wired magazine emphasizing why "Free is the Future of Business"

Great video, however it died on me a few times and I didn't get to watch the last 10 minutes.

Thanks for posting that - I really like his stuff, and I agree with a lot of his philosophy.

A related book well worth reading is "How To Get Rich" by Felix Dennis - he's the guy who created Dennis Publishing (PC Pro, Computer Shopper, Maxim). There's some really useful info in there, but the biggest thing I took away from it is that I have absolutely no wish to follow the path of trying to grow a huge company and make hundreds of miliions - the price is just too high.

Great video, however it died on me a few times and I didn't get to watch the last 10 minutes.
Yeah, it happened to me a couple times, so I went to the original version and watched the last bit there.

Good stuff for motivation.

That's a great video, I like watching speakers who aren't "speakers". You can feel his passion and can tell he knows his stuff. Even if you don't agree with everything he says, it still gets you fired up (did for me anyway)

The very last thing he covered in the Q&A is something I've been doing for about six months and it has made a huge difference.

I cut my work hours down to no more than 6 a day & 5 a week(a few in the morning, a few in the afternoon/evening), some days 8 (but that's just because I lose track of time), and I get more done than when I was cranking out 14-16 hours a day / 7 days a week.

I'm so much more productive, I guess because I want to get finished with whatever I've set as my current goal so I can get to my daily fuckin' off time
