So this news story just sprung up in my RSS reader from multiple sources.

Facebook Inc wants more credit for making online cash registers ring.

Facebook will begin rolling out on Friday a new tool which will allow online retailers to track purchases by members of the social network who have viewed their ads.

The tool is the latest of the new advertising features Facebook is offering to convince marketers that steering advertising dollars to the company will deliver a payoff.

Exclusive: Facebook offering e-retailers sales tracking tool - Yahoo! News

Looks like an aftermath of the recent much talked about Mark Cuban walkoff. FB Damage control?

Still looking for screenshots or any info on how the tools looks/functions etc.

Ouch. Really?!?! Wow, maybe going public wasn't such a great idea. Talk about clutching at straws.

Beginning of the end?

Yah, I was talking to blureach about this the other day.

I think it could potentially work, but I'm going to bet against it. In this model, you're going to have to rely on cashiers to give a fuck to properly collect consumer names and e-mails. I imagine they'd use a software that would force the cashier to collect this information before it allowed the receipt to print. But at the same time, they'd have to include some sort of "Skip" action for appropriate circumstances. And what cashier wouldn't just click "Skip" in every circumstance for the sake of time saved?

I just don't see how they can get this system into common practice to the point where the data actually means anything.

Isn't this a conversion pixel for online purchases? What you mean cashier?

It's about time they get a conversion pixel, lol. Think they had one a couple of years back, but then stopped it. I'm guessing most major businesses already have conversion tracking anyway because they're using third party api tools.

Might've helped if I read the article.

Read an article a week or so ago regarding giving tracking capabilities to offline retailers as well. Assumed this was that article.
