It's a source of pride to be working at a job that doesn't pay well?

It's a source of pride to stick with a job that doesn't pay as well as you'd like instead of just quitting and being unemployed. The kid said he had looked for work and couldn't get a better paying job. So between continuing to work and not working at all, he made a choice to remain productive.

So yeah. I agree with what Obama said.

I suspect President Obama said that in order to defuse the growing frustration in that room about unemployment. It's an emotional issue (understandably) that can easily grow out of control. Obama is brilliant at influencing emotions. It was the right thing to say at the time. Inaccurate, but given the situation, his position, and his audience, appropriate.

Most activities that earn money, whether that means working in a fast food joint or selling sliced 'n diced toxic mortgage-backed securities, do so because of a transfer of value. Someone considers the activity valuable and is willing to pay someone else to do it.

Pretty obvious to everyone here, of course. But, a lot of folks with jobs forget that. Instead, they think their paycheck is somehow their right. Fact is, if the guy who works at McDonalds wants a better-paying job, he needs to learn a craft that others consider more valuable.

Seems to me that's where true pride is found.
