The Associated Press: Marine's dad ordered to pay protesters' court fees

BALTIMORE — The father of a Marine killed in Iraq and whose funeral was picketed by anti-gay protesters was ordered to pay the protesters' appeal costs, his lawyers said Monday.

On Friday, Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit ordered Snyder to pay $16,510 to Fred Phelps. Phelps is the leader of the Westboro Baptist Church, which conducted protests at Marine Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder's funeral in 2006.

The two-page decision supplied by attorneys for Albert Snyder of York, Pa., offered no details on how the court came to its decision.

Attorneys also said Snyder is struggling to come up with fees associated with filing a brief with the U.S. Supreme Court.

The decision adds "insult to injury," said Sean Summers, one of Snyder's lawyers.

The high court agreed to consider whether the protesters' message is protected by the First Amendment or limited by the competing privacy and religious rights of the mourners.

Father of Iraq soldier in this case sues for $5 Mil in damages.

I believe he gets granted it but the decision is overturned in appeals court.

Courts order pops to pay for legal costs of the defendant (not unusual if you lose a case).

Thanks for clearing that up. This brings up a good debate though first amendment rights vs... well fucking human decency, I guess.

Technically, I suppose the protesters are within their rights but jesus. You know what I would do? Organize an anti-asshole protest and protest on those protester's front lawn. (within legally appropriate distances of course)

That rocks. When other people come out to show support for the family it shows how irrelevant the Phelps really are. So at least the families can take comfort in that.

And this is why i always stoop down to peoples level when they go tard on me.

They protested at his sons funeral which was in horribly bad taste and a complete dick move but still within their freedom of speech rights. Instead of dumping 2 tons of manure on their church lawn and setting it on fire he decides to rise above and sue them for a butt ton of money. Of course, since it was within their rights (as dickish as it is), that makes the lawsuit frivolous and so the court made him pay the appeals. Now he's butt hurt because he has to pay their side of the court costs? Fuck that he should have settled it like a man instead of running crying to the courts. It's a church for crying out loud theres probably a new funeral every few months for a deceased member he can rightfully turn into a circus. I'd be turning every one into a raging party and if he has friends like mine they'd join me.

I dont think the church would be shamed by having their own game turned around on them. To truly piss them off donations should be taken to hire a few gay male prostitutes and have them just start pounding each other in the back pews during one of the services.
