forum spam, how are they doing it?

i've created a forum using phpboards. more and more i keep getting hit with spam post. are people going through the trouble of doing the image verification just to make one post or is this a bot of sorts?

Ban all @mail.ru email addresses from signing up.

I also have a script in place for Vbulletin that checks how long it takes you to complete the signup process. Bots normally do it in <5secs whereas a normal user will take 15-30secs.

there are 2 different bots that i know and can do this. Perhaps there are more, but at least 2.

I have a phpBB board and was getting nailed with spam as well until I put this mod in. I have not had a single spam post since then on all three of my forums. It makes them wait however long you determine to post an url to your forum and since that is all those spam posts are, you are good to go. Give it a try.

I use that mod too, it works like a charm . How ever i have seen some bots make a normal post first like: Did you see the soccer match last night, russia vs england 3-0 or something like that
then a few days later they make their spam message;x

Xrumer has that built-in functionality, actually. So if you're smart with it, you don't just make a spammy first post with a link in it.
