Is it better to have a static block of text for your front page targeting a few of your juicy top level keywords, or is it better for your front page to be a list of your latest posts/pages?

Assuming your home/front page get the maximum traffic, isn't it advisable to flash your latest content to your visitors? That way, you get less bounce rate and more pageviews per visit.

Better put your squeeze page as a front page, build your list faster.

I'm trying to build a community and I never like it when I'm going to www.gaydogporn.com and am directly given a squeeze page. I've got CTA's built into the content to try and get people to "join the community".

We'll see how it goes once I launch.

This is a false dichotomy. A third option (and better option) could be... both!

True, it just feels like that above-the-fold space is at a premium and if I have a static page taking up space telling everyone how awesome xyz is, that's less room to show visitors other awesome shit they can read about.

Depends on your niche and site. If you're constantly updating with new content, then static is not that good. Do remember most visitors would find your site through term searches, that would lead to that specific page.

You be the judge, but for my taste I like new updates showing.

You can put the new, cool stuff up top, and the static stuff below. Feed the people first, then the search engine second. Everyone wins and is happy.
