I don't care if you use shared/vps/dedi or what. Here's the secret to uptime - DNS failover.

I run my stuff on two separate VPS/cloud instances - one as primary & one as backup/failover. All files are rsync'ed every 5 minutes from primary to backup, and my databases are set up on replication. There are a number of ways to do this, and it takes a little while to set up, but it's worth it - trust me.

On top of that, I use DNS Made Easy's failover DNS with 60 second TTL on the DNS records. If my primary server goes down, the DNS is automatically switched over to my backup host.

I used to be in the hosting industry. I'd never put my sites on a traditional "shared" host after seeing what happens in the industry. At the least, learn basic linux skills and get a cheap VPS running CPanel.
