Useless tests for useless people and waist of time and money. Furthermore, passing a Microsoft test does NOT say anything about how well or capable to do the job. (Read a brain dump and you will pass, guaranteed) Well, the place that I work at just requested all the IT department to refresh their Certs to the latest and greatest. Back to reading whitepapers on TechNet...

Hmmm.

So is that what having a job feels like?

Certs get you in the door, actual knowledge keeps you there more than a month.

Yep.

An old friend runs a networking company (started it twenty years ago, back when certs meant something). He and his partners say, "These young guys expect $70K with benefits just because they have certs. They don't get it. The certs got 'em the interview. Their ability to learn and apply, along with top-notch people skills, gets 'em the cash and career."

With a CCIE I would expect 100k+ with benefits.

What would you expect with a CCIE + CISSP?

I would not bitch about the current Microsoft tests. They are not that bad. My first test I took was for NT 3.51. Talk about a busllshit easy test. And what about all the paper-mcse's that NT 4.0 introduced.

With CCIE you could start your own CISCO authorized reseller company. Not to mention, the test is like 2k + need to fly to San Jose for a two day hands on test...

Yes, I know about the process :)

MCSE Certs got me in the door, Who I knew got me the job.

there are many companies that use the certs as a filter.
like above poster said, it gets you the interview.

Im a paper MCSE 2000, didnt have squat experience in IT but a friend hooked me up with a $65k job and just needed me to have certs so he can justify hiring me.

He did expect me to learn the job within 3 months, which was no problem if you delve yourself into it.

Remember my only cert, the old Sun Java Developer, not easy if you didn't master the language but useless like all the certs.
Today most certs are a scam system. Firms pay Microsoft to keep their status of "Microsoft Certified" and other firms require the certs from employees.
