if you've got a business, you didn't build that, somebody else made that happen.

Interesting Thread.
I have a unique perspective of partnerships as I've been fucked twice and watched 3-4 friends get screwed by them.

I am still pro-partnerships and have partnerships with several of my good friends and working on a partnership with family.

Partnerships are worth it (to me) for two reasons.
1. It allows you to leverage your skills and time.
2. It has a positive effect on motivation that I've struggled with working solo. It helps keep things in motion.

Everyone knows communication is the key ingredient to a successful partnership. People struggle with communicating about the right things.

I am the epitome of a skeptic. The only thing I truly trust in people is their actions are guided by their optimum strategy. This means I understand people partner with me for one reason, I'm useful. The minute I stop being useful to their cause, they will opt to exit the partnership.

I set my partnerships up to be win-win situations. Instead of acting like a skeptic, I focus on red-flags or bad "vibes" about the persons actions. If you see a red-flag, you need to discuss it immediately which is the key to communication. No assumptions. If something doesn't seem right, bring it up and figure out why ASAP. Don't be afraid to cut your losses if red flags continue to pop-up regardless of the causes or excuses made.

In every situation I've witnessed end poorly (including my own), plenty of red flags surfaced that predicted the down-fall early were ignored.

I have opinions on red flag considerations and ways to ensure the partnership stays a win-win but you probably know most of them.
It's just a matter of getting back on the saddle and understanding people aren't out to fuck you, rather they are self interested. Just use their self-interest to your advantage and stay useful.

Control over your business. That's what you lost.

Feel your pain, got fucked years ago the same way. Now I can partner, but with my own terms.

The the lesson I learnt the hard way, was to never do a partnership where I do not control 90% of shit, in order to keep my business in case of a betrayal (or the partner just bailing out).

If the other person doesn't agree with this terms, fuck her. Find another one.

Position yourself to be able to fuck, not to be fucked.

I've worked or rather tried working with people that have this mentality and it doesn't make for a healthy relationship.

There definitely has to be a degree of trust. I am a cynical mother fucker, but I force myself to put trust in the other person that they will do things to further the partnership. I might expose myself to additional risk but it's always calculated. In the event someone fucks me, I have my bases covered.
