Fuck You, Jay Leno

Say what you want about Jay, but there aren't too many nicer celebrities.

A couple months ago, my mom and dad met him while they were in town, and he got us VIP seating to his show. Not only that, but he PERSONALLY called my mom to double-check that she was coming to the show that day, and gave us a shout-out after the show wrapped.

After that experience, Jay Leno FTW.

I've never met Jay Leno myself...but I have heard similar stories to yours. He does seem like he would be easy to chat with, and as much of an "average joe" attitude off screen as you could expect most any celeb to have.

Nicer? Jay Leno's comedy consists of stalking the streets of California in all-denim, looking for people who he can portray as stupid for laughs.

His intro consists of a monologue that tries to paint other people as stupid.

Let's not forget his staple- poring through wanted ads for ads written by people who he tries to make look stupid.

The shtick is getting old. He's just a white Carlos Mencia.

There's a new show coming on after Everybody Loves Raymond.
It's called Everybody Hates Jay Leno.

Modified that to my desktop :D

who hacked Popeye's account?

This is the problem I find with the Internet. You cant have a middle of the road opinion. Either you must go and suck up to the far right freaks or the far left freaks. NO in between.

Both are just as fuckin stupid but you have to pick one side to deal with. One side (the far right) are older but less informed and the left (mostly early 20 something) are in college or just out of college and doBon't really have any life experience outside of living in the dorm and their parents paying their bills.

I lean toward the older crowd who have at least worked, paied taxes and raised familes but they are at times just as closed minded as the just outa puberty left.

I think the larger problem that no one's addressing is that late night comedy is an outdated and, for lack of a better word, lame comedy medium that should go the way of MJ anyway. Conan's kind of funny, Letterman's less funny and Leno's less funny still, but really the whole format is just terrible.

If it's not a cartoon I'm not interested.

You don't like his comedy, that's fine (I prefer Conan myself). But the fact is, more people preferred Leno at the Tonight Show, than Conan.

Leno was averaging over 5.2 million viewers a night on the Tonight Show. Conan is average LESS THAN HALF of that, at 2.5 million.

That's to be expected. Leno has had a long time on his show. He's had time to tweak his content, style, format, etc. His fans are accustomed to him.

Of course when someone comes in it will be uncomfortable and the audience will shrink. The key is to give the new guy some time to build his own show and his own audience. Fallon is facing the same problem after taking over from Conan.

From what I've read, Leno had 2 years to build a following. Plus, much of his audience over the years was already preloaded due to the NBC prime time lineup (Friends, Seinfeld, Cheers, etc.).

Conan has only had 6 or 7 months. And his launch pad? Leno, who was already hemorrhaging viewers in the 10:00 spot.

While Conan may never have reached Leno's peak numbers, comparing them side by side at this point ignores important factors.

I see what you are saying....it would be interesting to see the numbers from when Jay took over in 92 (I couldn't find them with a quick search).

One thing I don't buy into though is the preloaded viewers, people who stay on the same channel through prime time shows - local news - tonight show/late night.

I mean, back when Jay took over, 10 years ago, even 5 years ago, sure, I'd believe it.
But in today's world of on screen menus, 100+ channels, and DVRs, I don't know anyone who stays on the same channel for basically 2 1/2 - 3 hours straight. If I want to watch NBC at 7, Fox at 9, and The Tonight Show at 10:35, that's what I'll do (or I'll just record what I want and watch each show later). What comes on before is of no concern to me (and a lot of other people I assume).
