LOL, this a perfect example of how the right wing propaganda/ignorance machine can work.
The US consumes 7 billion barrels of oil per year. The government estimates that if the Dakota and Montana Bakken fields were fully developed, the recoverable amount would be 4 or 5 billion barrels.
A few weeks ago a US oil drilling company CEO, who wants to amp up the drill baby drilling, estimated it to be 25 billion.
Somehow his statements have been spun into saying that the Bakken fields have more oil than Saudi Arabia, which has hundreds of billions of recoverable barrels worth.
I won't be shedding a tear for Gaddafi. I'm not in for capital punishment but this guy is better off dead. Fuck trials and all that bullshit, so many people have died at his hands and trying to capture him...just easier in the long run.

No. But I do tend to give some credence to stats from reputable sources like the CIA Factbook, the Economist, and the like (that actually have a certain track record of accuracy) before I believe the kind of shit that is posted on Wikipedia and taken for fact by the kind of paranoid tinfoil hat wearing folks that come into these threads talking about how great things were in Lybia because they found some random article or photo.
Gaddafi and his family ran that fucking country and sucked the cash out of it. They owned the oil companies, the shipping companies, the construction companies, etc., and the proceeds were most certainly not distributed in an equitable way. If people actually had their standard of living improving so rapidly (as claimed in the text posted by BigWill) do you really think they would have risked rising up against a mechanized modern army?
I love that people are smart enough to not blindly swallow whatever they are told by their govt or just rely on a single news source but that also needs to be tempered by common sense and objectivity. Just because it feels good to say, "Hahaha, look at the sheeple believing things that are in newspapers and photos and backed by video shot by people on the ground. Thats clearly all just fake man!!!!", doesnt mean that should be a knee jerk reaction.
