Blessed are those who do not take the name of His Noodley Appendage in vain. They will be rewarded with beer volcanoes and stripper factories. rAmen.

I apologize, Turbo. It was clearly meant as a joke. That's what we do around here - joke around with each other. I didn't know you would take it so seriously.

Thanks for that. As far as I'm concerned, we're cool.

lol look at the similar threads listed below. It's all the ones that match with the word goddamn. :)

LOL. It's like you were trying to distract people from an uncomfortable moment. "hey everyone...look over there!!"

Religion is something thats kinda interested me, however I hate talking about it. Some people get way to serious about it, and then it becomes fucking impossible to have an intelligent conversation. They just don't fucking listen. But yea, this kinda talk aggravates me, so I'm done.

Ah what a rip. I thought the "way of the master" was going to be some Bruce Lee shit.

Fuck.

I celebrate thanksgiving and christmas because I think they represent family, reflection, and time to celebrate the joy of being alive.

I thought it was all about the food... and the beer. :xomunch: That's it, I'm there for the food and the beer. I'm thankful to the goddess of food and beer.

I'm hungry now.

Then I'll see you in hell.

Hahaha! Nice one.

Buddhism makes a lot more sense to me that Christianity - the original teachings, not the bullshit religion that's built up around it - a personal quest for Nirvana. I can accept that all suffering comes from desire, but I seem to have eliminated my desire to eliminate desire... :anon.sml: I doubt I'll find Nirvana... but I've seen the Foo Fighters a couple of times - does that count?

I used to think Buddhism was cool, but I like wanting things. We're just animals, and being without desire means having no purpose.

Wanting things is what drives me to become better. A better person, smarter, wiser, healthier, more informed, more educated, more accomplished, more skillful, more sensitive, more caring, more perceptive.

Without desire, what remains? Peace? Peace is just the absense of conflict, it's not a tangible goal.

I'm happy the way I am. I am not going to sit in a cave for 20 years and eat offerings from villagers impressed by my inner peace. I like having desires and goals and ambitions. I like the feeling of achievement.

Enlightenment doesn't equal detachment.

L O fucking L... thats pretty good

And to me religion is just fear based bullshit. I believe in something higher and more powerful than myself.. but it sure as hell isn't something as humanized as religion.

Well said, if you want to read some great books on Budhism and eastern thought, check out "The Book":

Amazon.com: The Book: On the Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are: Books: Alan Watts

A fascinating read.

My wife is christian and I am athiest. We have some heated debates. I always win because her answer for everything is "I just have faith."

There is no proof anywhere. Most Christians never have any way to back up what they believe in. It's pretty INSANE if you ask me.

Here's what I asked her mom one time:

Brad: God gave man free-will correct?
Her: Yes
Brad: So when human beings out of their free will create cures to diseases, God can not be given credit?
Her: No, God gives the gift to the people who create the cure, so he essentially cured the disease.
Brad: Oh, okay... makes sense. So when a man rapes and murders his 8 year old daughter, he didn't do it out of free will. He was given that gift by God, correct?
Her: Errr... well no.
Brad: Aren't tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, volcanoes etc all created by God?
Her: Errrrr.... yes.
Brad: So if God is capable of killing people by natural disaster, why is he not capable of killing people through his vessels?

Basically the argument went on for 20 minutes but she stopped talking after being clearly defeated.

She claims God can cure cancer etc by using humans as the vessel. Yet humans have free will that allows us to do anything WE choose. So when I brought up the rapist/murder scenario she realized the flaw in her (and her religions) logic and how it may be a tad (100%) hypocritical.

Let me replace your mother inlaw with my mom:

Me: So when a man rapes and murders his 8 year old daughter, he didn't do it out of free will. He was given that gift by God, correct?
My mom: No, that would be Satan's influence.
Me: But he will still go to heaven as long as he repents?
My Mom: Yes
Me: But... I am still going to hell for not being a christian.
My Mom: Yes.

Lesson: You can't argue with insanity.

We take the mother/daughter relationship to a whole new level.

God, it's frustrating trying to have an intelligent discussion about anything with people who have "beliefs".

I think it was in the film Dogma someone said "don't have beliefs, have ideas".

We really shouldn't criticize people's religions. I find it hard to attack a person of faith, any faith and in all reality your spirituality is between you and who you worship. It doesn't matter if you believe in what I believe, nor I believe what you believe, I will still have faith.
As far as debating if there is a God, it doesn't matter what we conclude, as the outcome would be the same. There either is a God or there isn't. That's what faith is, believeing in something you can't see.
I am a Christian. I like and get along with everyone, even atheists. You wouldn't know what my religion was if I didn't tell you, so it shouldn't matter to you anyway. I can't make you believe what I believe, nor would I try.

The reason I replied to this was that before you start insulting people of faith, you may want to consider that you may be saying something hurtful to someone you know and not know it. I agree that Christians shouldn't be spamming people, but neither should any industry or group. I am not big on church either, and I know alot of people have been abused by the church, especially the catholic church, but that's a different issue in itself.

Ok, flame away....

It's not the calm, quiet, confident people of faith that I have a problem with. I have a problem with:

- People who kill in the name of love (bombing a planned parenthood center, or an abortion clinic)
- People who stifle their child's ability to think for themselves
- People who don't even try to question the pablum they've been fed by society/their peers/their family
- People who kill in the name of their religion (kill the atheist, kill the foreigner, kill the nonbeliever)
- People who say they believe in a codified system of ethics but obviously don't practice what they preach
- People who go to church and dress sharp and thank God in public then go home and molest their children or beat their wife
- People who think the Earth is 10,000 years old and dinosaur bones were planted as a test of their faith -- and want to teach it as truth in schools
- People who start a religion completely cynically and it ends up hurting people (L. Ron Hubbard)
- People in their 40's and 50's "marrying" a woman for a short time to avoid violating the letter of the law in their religion (this happens in Middle Eastern countries from reports I've read)
- People in their 40's and 50's marrying multiple 13 and 14 year-old's and having multiple children with them and then having sex with their own children and having progeny by them as well (this happens with crazy Christian sects)
- Men beating their wives because their book tells them they are in charge
- Men killing women who don't wear their veil, or kill women who do the same thing men do (infidelity, fornication)

This isn't about being anti-Christian... it's about being anti-"you use the rules of your religion as an excuse to do intolerable things to other people".

I have no truck with the ones who don't use their religion as a club to violate the rights of others. I am very polite to the people who comes to my house every Saturday morning proselytizing their religion. I calmly tell them no thank you, I am not interested.

Good Discussion.

I do not mean to offend anyone. Or maybe I do, I don't know. I just get really fed up with it all and when I see red...well like anyone else I tend to step on some toes along the way.

Maybe it's that I'm tired of being offended by the zealots everyday but no one seems to think that that matters. I get these mass christian emails almost on a daily basis all from people that KNOW I'm an atheist but does that stop them? No, infact Im pretty sure that's their motivation. And yet when I reach the breaking point everyone else gets offended by my anger. It's like they are perfectly within their rights to tell me how misguided, clueless, or hedonistic I am. But heaven forbid (<--woah I had to come back to this sentence, total unintended pun) I point out that they are acting like sheep. Actually I've come across christians who take this as a compliment (God is the shepard they are the flock..blah blah).

I've probably just made any offending statments worse now, so let me just wind this up. xecutech, you seem like a smart reasonable guy and I don't have issues with people of faith that present it in your manner. I do have friends and an uncle that are hard core christians and I still have the utmost respect for them a) because they don't shove anything down my throat b) they aren't morons and do actually attempt to think about things, we just come to different conclusions (my uncle is against abortion AND the death penalty because he believes it's wrong for anyone other than God to take human life...see? thats not so bad at least its consistent and non-hypocritical, regardless of whether not I agree) and c) they REALLY DO live like they think Jesus lived. They are caring, positive, loving and really funny people.

So in conclusion, I don't have a problem with people of faith (maybe even a little envious sometimes ;) but I can't stand the fanatics. They really do give the people of faith a bad name :(

I'd like to end this with one of my favorite Mahatma Gandhi quotes: “I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.”
