Going to Hawaii...suggestions?

I'm suprised that will all of these replies, no one has mentioned the Hilton Waikoloa on the big island. When I visited my daughter, who was living in Waikiki, she insisted that we take a hop there, and spend a couple of nights. She said it was where the islanders went to vacation.

It was awesome. Three towers of rooms. You have the choice of riding the train, taking a boat, or walking to get to your room. Of course, you will want to do all three while you are there. The grounds are very scenic, and have many marble Buddhist statues, as well as other life size sculptures. There are two lagoons; one has a waterfall, and one is for the dolphins. And, that is just the highlights.

It is well worth an overnight visit. It took me two days to see and do everything I wanted at the resort. I suggest you research it on the net.

+1 of Kauai

It's definitely more for the non-tourist/outdoor-sy type. Stay down in Piopu on the south end or camp on the beach in the northwest.

oh yeh, and i'm biased, but i love the big island. not as crowded as oahu for sure, and you can go from snow to sand in an hour.

The waikoloa was TOO big for me and the family...friggin 1/2 hour just to get to your car in the valet...boats take you to your room/tower, trams etc....reminds me of disney world....

Hotel Hana Maui - kind of expensive but great place to stay. Secluded beach with great waves to mess around in.

Big Island - not typical Hawaii but kind of cool. The whole island is like one big lava flow, litterally, and usually an active lava flow somewhere going on to go look at.

I'm not a fan of the big island because I grew up there BUT if you want to do family stuff Kona on the big island or Lahaina, Maui might be the best places to visit. Of those two places the big island is the only one were you can see a volcano so that might be the best bet.

The great thing about Kona is there are a bunch of great hotels to choose from and the beaches there are always usually in the top 3 beaches in the U.S. Also resist the temptation to visit the Hilo side of the island because there really isn't anything to see there unless you've never been to a Wal-mart before.

you aren't by any chance owen from RSD are u?

I'd say the Big Island... I might be partial because we went swimming with Dolphins in the open ocean.

Also, I think Maui is a big overrated... it's still pretty sweet but the traffic and having to travel to wherever you're going gets to be a bit of a pain. The big island you have to travel too but the traffic is way less and more diverse.

Waikiki is ok if you know what you're getting before you go and know that it's essentially a big city by the water.

Nice choice! Hawaii is an enchanting place and I've been there 4 times each filled with unforgettable fun and adventure. Kauai's a must see and try to join their luaus or if you want top sightseeing experience, enlist to kauai helicopter tours and you'll be touring around Hawaii seeing the islands(don't forget your camera or you will regret it deeply). It's best to fly in the morning. Hope this helps!
