So I'm going to try being vegan for 30 days. Partly because I want the challenge. Also because I convinced my girlfriend to quit smoking for 30 days as well if I go vegan.

But mainly for the health benefits.

Before we get some ignorant assholes in this thread, everyone must watch Forks over Knives or at least read the wikipedia page (Forks over Knives - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ) before posting in here.

Fellow vegans, how has the transition been made easier? What type of struggles am I going to encounter. Favorite vegan sites and recipes?

The biggest hurdle will be getting food on the go. I've had a couple friends who slip-up when they eat out at lunch with friends or on a drive out of town because of convenience.

Vegan Recipes - Allrecipes.com

The above site is awesome for recipes for just about anything - so is their iPhone app.

I had a vegan friend that ate lunch with us almost everyday. We were courteous enough to pick restaurants that would at least have something he could eat. Normally he'd eat a salad or just french fires (depending on what they were cooked in).

We'd tease him, but that's about it.

Yeah, I actually just went to lunch with my co-workers and we went to an Italian place. Was hard not ordering anything with cheese in it. Picked the veggie pasta and was pretty good.

Honestly one of the biggest things I'm concerned about is the social stigma, and being "that guy" at the restaurant that asks what's vegan.

Also definitely food on the go. I might just have to pack my lunches more often.

Get some Amy's frozen dinners. Find vegan junk food; riceworks chips at wal-mart are good and there are a lot of vegan potato chips that are good. Cookies and ice cream are easy to get too.

Once you have that stuff try to actually eat healthy and only use the frozen dinners and junk food to make things easier. Try to make salads with boxed lettuce and canned olives or onions or whatever you want. I try to make things as simple as possible and if you get boxed lettuce and canned olives and an onion with a good Annie's Naturals dressing (honey mustard is good if you are eating honey) you can make salads without much work.

As far as the social stigma goes you do get used to it but maybe if you are only trying to do 30 days you won't. You can always call ahead to restaurants and talk to them on the phone about what is and isn't vegan.

Old friend of mine had a college graduation party last week and him and all his closer friends are vegan. But his parents brought hamburgers.

I ate a hamburger in front of them and didn't give a shit. WHATCHOO WANT VEGANS NOW HUH???

Start making your own food. Try to avoid restaurants as who knows what is in the food they are serving you.

Try not to eat "vegan" food that is sold at the supermarket. Get a vegan cookbook and make the food yourself.

Lots of the vegan food sold at the supermarket tastes horrible.

Good luck bro.

I did it, don't do it. There are no health benefits. Short term you will feel better, especially if your diet was crap originally. But don't let it fool you. Long term you'll be short on iron and B12. This will make you fatigued and it will take you years to recover.

Fuck. This. Shit.

There are definitely health benefits. If you do the proper research you will come to the same conclusion. I just have to make sure to get the proper nutrients. You can definitely get enough B12 and Iron from a vegan based diet.

Also years to recover? Really.

It took me about a year to go from vegetarian to vegan. The key for me is that I never exercised discipline, I just ate what I wanted. One day I no longer wanted to eat meat, and like a year later, I no longer wanted to eat cheese.

Please link scientific studies showing benefits from abstaining animal products that have nothing to do with eating healthier in general.

And don't even start with the "we are herbivores" bullshit please.

What is the magical source of B12 in vegan diet?

There aren't any special health benefits of being vegan. You can be perfectly healthy as an omnivore or as a vegan. I know because I've been both.

I went vegan 3 years ago and won't ever go back to eating meat, but I did it for ethical reasons. Frankly I can't see any other sensible reason to do it other than simply not liking the taste of meat.
