Hey guys,
Was planning on buying from godaddy, but someone told me it is not that good. basically I need the privacy thing, unlimited domain hosting and sql dbs. Any ideas.

And oh is windows better than linux

Windows and Linux is 1 half dozen the other. The best platform is determined by what language you are going to be building your sites in. If you are building in ASP .NET then windows is the only option. If you are building sites in php (including wordpress, joomla etc) then use Linux.

In terms of plans you are probably better off going for a reseller account as you can achieve what you are after. If you go for windows avoid plesk if you plan on running 100 domains on the one account as plesk has inherit problems with running windows server.

If you want a good reseller package you should checkout site5 they offer a good variety of reseller packages for linux and they have good support & service for a good price.

pm me to let me know how you go.

Hey thanks a bunch for the response, just 1 more question, I want to design in dreamweaver and use WP etc... so I can use linux, right? I have used Windows before, so I pretty much know about Windows, but wanted a bit of a change. Basically all that I can do in Windows can also be done in Linux, too??

I think you're a tad confused how it works, HTML and other design elements created on Windows wouldn't necessarily differ than those created on a mac or on a linux box. Alas <html>...</html> still equals the same regardless of which text editor wrote it on a number of different systems.

If you are using dreamwever, you primarily just have to make sure you have the login credentials into the server (host, username, password, etc).

Far as the webserver itself, I wouldn't get windows unless you're specifically planning on developing with microsoft technologies (.Net, ASP, M$ SQL, etc etc). Otherwise it makes more sense to use a linux based server if you are developing in the more common platforms such as PHP/MySQL.

Far as hosting providers go, I haven't been a fan of shared hosting for a few years now, kind of spoiled by the benefits that at the least a VPS offers me. Right now I'm using KnownHost for the VPS servers I have.

+1 for Knownhost. If you're going to go with a VPS, they're great. Also, LiquidWeb is fantastic for VPS or Dedicated.

As the others said, unless you're coding in ASP, a Linux box is probably the best way to go. Both Knownhost and LiquidWeb offer fully managed servers, so if you need any help with the server side of things, they got your back.

Check out WebHostingTalk.com for deals on hosting. LiquidWeb always has deals there, and Knownhost usually does as well. I got 50% off my first payment with Knownhost from a deal they posted at WHT. I say "payment" because if you chose monthly payments, you got 50% off the first month, but if you choose annual payments you'd get 50% off your first year. I believe my monthly VPS with KH is $34, so it wouldn't take much for your sites to pay for the hosting AND you'll have more control over things.

Course I'm probably gona switch one of my VPS over to ZenSix so I get a price break on the unmanaged side of things. One of my VPS on knownhost is a bare centos install running the Nginx webserver which they don't support, yet the price is still the same as fully managed (where as ZenSix, if you need fully managed, its separately priced).

I was testing DMEHosting for about a month, since they had some 5.95/month unmanaged VPS plan, but the connection latency was killing me despite being in my own backyard just a state over.

I'm assuming for shared, to start out, Hostgator works for most folks? Just starting out myself, and hopefully will need VPS in the future, but for someone new is HostGator OK?

Most are fine with it, Cpanel + Fantastico and what not. Starting at ~6/month.

However for 20/year Zensix has shared hosting that comes with DirectAdmin + Installeron.

True its 500mb vs unlimited, but unlimited plans are obviously oversold.

I second hostgator as a pretty good shared hosting company. Never had any problems with them, never noticed any down time (which I can't say for webhostingpad or vodahost).

Linux for PHP things like wordpress, but if you have a windows VPS or Dedicated server, you can still run php/mysql/apache on those with WAMP

I have been using Steadfast for over a year and have been delighted by their service. They respond to support tickets in less than 15 minutes. They have no CPU restrictions unlike almost all Web Hosts, especially over sellers.

Don't go for over sellers if you plan to host multiple sites that use CPU intensive applications.

Unlimited is nothing but a marketing term. In real no host will give you Unlimited resources. Read their TOS and you will know how Unlimited their services are.

LiquidWeb is another very good option.

Always seem so sloppy whenever I hear someone recommend XAMP, WAMP, LAMP, etc. Not that hard to either compile or install the three major components and tweak them for performance/security.

I guess personally, feel if you're going to run a windows VPS/Dedi, might as well just go all the way with IIS and MS SQL Server, etc.

I guess what's mostly what I meant. PHP, MySql, and Apache run on windows servers as well

HawkHost has some solid review over webhostingtalk, highly recommended I got 1year hosting for 35$ (40% off first payment with code january2010 i think) Good support and reliable. I would definatly consider this one if I was you! And this come with cpanel and fantastico as well :banana_sml:
