It doesn't seem to be tied to any google account at all... Just a tiny JS snippet in your header and a call in your html... Easy peasy.

Lets think about this for 1 second
1) I don't care how many people +1 something, I care how which people I give a shit about (them and their opinion) +1 something. Those people don't have Google profiles, therefore this is not useful to me.
2) This is incredibly easy to game. So if it has any effect on rankings, or anything else, it will be abused to the point of uselessness.
3) Ultimately this is just about Google trying to get more information about you in order to personalize more shit for you. People won't see it that way, but thats all it is.
4) Like's about are sharing, because of 1) above , you aren't actually sharing anything with anyone that matters.
5) There is no reason for a webmaster to incorporate this other than to suck up to Google.
Again, this is stupid shit. Google can put it on all their toolbars, in all their chrome notebooks, and in android. Other than possibly helping their search results (but not in a way that seems obvious to users, like the like + bing integration where you actually see pictures of your friends) users will see no direct benefit from this and no incentive to use it.
So long as Facebook owns identity, Google cannot win this fight. Google's best chance then is Android to control more identity, but they are so far behind that at best they can own some mobile identity, and never majority of web identity.

I'm sure we will have to get on board eventually, but I'd prefer all webmasters just ignore it, not install the button, not play the game, and not give G more data to use as an excuse to manipulate rankings.
Why don't you try reading WTF it does... You're making a TON of assumption here.
It's going to be everywhere.
It:
1. Is Mega-easy to impliment by any webmaster who thinks it'll get them more traffic.
2. Is NOT tied to profiles, so people like myself can impliment it across 700 sites without any downside.
3. Doesn't need to be seen in any profile like facebook Likes do. -All you need to 'benefit' from a +1 is to search in google or browse a web page. (Then you'll see which of your friends +1 anything on that page (if you're logged in) and the total # of ppl that +1 that same element too.
4. Isn't just about pages, a la facebook. -You're going to see 20 +1s on a single page when you google from now on, including the ads down the side or even just someone's picture...
5. Has the myth & hope of affecting google rankings... I don't see any evidence that it will, but c'mon, SEOs try crazy things every single day because they thought Matt Cutts wants them to. This will def. be thought of by the white hats as "necessary for good rankings."

Oh dear, looks like our sites will be very popular in India after the BST section gets on it...
First of all, the +1 button isn't tied to profiles, chrome, etc.... Basically, just a visitor that is notifying google that they approve of this search result. In other word, they want input of real humans to help determine search quality rather than a computer algorithm. And I don't blame them - as low quality sites have been ranking highly from spam links for years. In their view, this will help weed out shitty sites and give more love to sites that are providing "value" (via +1 button).
Second of all, who cares if this can be gamed.... So can EVERYTHING that google uses to determine the ranking of a web site. This will be no different. The % of people that will game this is probably less than 1% of all webmasters. The positive effects of the entire web ecosystem from the #1 button (in their mind) outweighs the negative effects of 1% of people that are smart enough to game it.
Links have been gamed for years. Hasn't stopped Google from making links it's primary factor in determining SERPs. Just sayin.
By the way, if you're running WordPress and Bad Behavior, you need to disable Bad Behavior for +1 to work.

Google can be gamed already or "SEO" wouldnt exist. Google, Yahoo, Facebook, etc. all want to find out more information about you 24/7. This is no different.
how is this different from Buzz, Wave, Google Bookmarks and all other attemps from Google to steal the show?
