Google +1 button just went live

Why is the discussion focused on whether this is a good move for G.

Who cares if G goes to hell.

All I care about is getting $$ into my pockets and my customer's pockets.

So all I have to think about is how to abuse this. You should too, if you are serious about SEO and earning $$$

And in that vain I still say as webmasters we'd be dumb not to put these badges on all our sites.

For those who say "Badges? We don't need no steenkin' Badges!" -I'll be gratefully taking your share of the free traffic here.

Ermm, I never said I'd put the badges on all my sites.

In fact, I would recomend against it. Some sites? Maybe. The legit sites? Sure. But I'm just not quick to give information to my enemies.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this works on this:
https://apis.google.com/js/plusone.js

And from my limited understanding of Javascript, this means Google will get a lot more info on your 'on page' activity than they would have without it.
Do you see anything in there that you wouldn't want search engines like google to have? -There is certainly nothing I can see that links that blog to other blogs you own or even to a google account of any kind.

Of course if you are already giving big G all your data through analytics, then never mind :)
Noooooo... That links accounts. I've been happily anal-itics free for 3 years now. ;)

It may not link sites, but it will give G information on your on-site visitor activity. I'm not saying they can't get some of this by checking SERP bounces and from toolbar data. But I ain't going to help them know that some of my sites people just don't like.

For legit sites, I don't see this as an issue.

so is there any -1 button too? Else it may not be linked to your ranking results. Anways lets wait and watch.

I added it to about half my sites, but interestingly I haven't seen a single one on any websites I've been browsing the last few days. Hasn't really caught on super quickly.

Google +1 Button Performance Review

In short: the Google +1 Button performance is very disappointing. The extra page load time can easily be 2 seconds.
+Repped, excellent share.

They do give alternative code on that page to help it load faster and in better order... Without that code I would not recommend anyone use +1 in its' current form, too many ugly problems with JS, cacheing, and the order of your page load. -The alternative code given below fixes most of it:

Code:
<!-- Place this tag just before your close body tag -->
<script>
(function(d, t) {
var g = d.createElement(t),
	s = d.getElementsByTagName(t)[0];
g.async = true;
g.src = 'https://apis.google.com/js/plusone.js';
s.parentNode.insertBefore(g, s);
})(document, 'script');
</script>

<!-- Place this tag where you want the +1 button to render -->
<g:plusone></g:plusone>

I just feel like Google is cemented in the minds of the masses as a tool you use to find shit. That's why it became a verb. And even some great-grandparents understand that Facebook is a place for personal profiles and social interaction. A place you go to network with friends and family. Not a place you go to find shit. Most people under the age of 40 know the difference between saying "Google me" and "Facebook me."

Both entities are so well-branded in their respective ways, it seems to me the amount of work necessary to reshape the public perception of each of their companies would be daunting, if it could actually be done (which I doubt).

Google cannot be Facebook, just like Facebook cannot be Twitter. And eBay cannot be Amazon. I really can't think of any online giants successfully re-branding and moving into a different space. Granted I haven't put a lot of thought into it.

Facebook could be MySpace, because they were branded similarly. Facebook just did a much better job of creating a usable website and gaining a respectable (compared to MySpace) reputation.

All of Google's attempts at anything social have failed.

This is a great post, but two points:

1. You are smart. 97%+ of your friends are not the "maven" you are when it comes to products, and will gladly take shopping advice from others.

Have any friends who recently had babies? It's AMAZING as a marketer to see the information they share. They're all cluelessly lost in this brave new world of mothering, but a woman with a 2 month old will do ANYTHING a trusted woman with a 2 year old recommends.

2. I would not underestimate the determination of the smart and aggressive people at Facebook. They're clearly not a company that's sitting still. They want a piece of that search pie, at least wherever its applicable, such as in situations where social recommendation outweighs some SEOs promoting "XYZ reviews" keyword

I'm not saying Facebook will get that piece of the pie, but Google sees that it's going to be under attack and is desperately trying to so something (and currently failing). Yet of course G is still *succeeding* because they are still best at search and will be for a few more years at least... plus all of your points above.

But Facebook is coming and G can't do nothing, and they know it.

I put it up on a site where I typically get between 50-200 Likes per post. I didn't get a single fucking +1.. pulled it down and put Likes back up today.

Soo....

Besides making sites slow as shit (unless you implement asynchronously) lets see how its actually being used now.

Checking techcrunch.com and mashable.com front pages and I see most current articles have at least 10x the number of facebook likes as google +1s, and that is on tech blogs where the majority of users probably have gmail accounts.

Too soon to call it a total failure but not looking good for Google here... The nerd can start buying "cool kids" clothes but it will not make him a cool kid.
