But whats to stop them applying all their nice and clever search algorithms to the data and using it for all sorts of whatever they like

I'm dissapointed, I thought this service would be more like paypal...
It may still be, but Google tends to put a new twist on an old idea. They rarely do carbon copies of someone else's ideas.
 
Has anyone signed up? I read through there developer area it sounds reasonable. I have a client that I think the "Buy Now" would be perfect for. One question I have is... do the customers need a google account too? Or is it like pay pal and you can serve up the a customized checkout page for the customer?

I decided to give Google Checkout a shot. Signed up, got all set (pretty quickly, well done Google). Headed over to Buy.com. Saw this laptop and thought that if it worked it’d be a nice buy.
Added it to my cart. Clicked “Proceed to Checkout”. Clicked to go to Google Checkout. And…
