Many of the Roller Coaster Rides that is SEO.. Just wanted to show you a small Google Dance that happened to me over the weekend.

The site:

  • Site is 1.3 years Old
  • Has a PR of 5
  • Has some really HQ links pointing to Home

All of a sudden, Google decided that my sub pages should not be on Page One. Most of my sub pages were at number 6-7 rank on page one.
I was experimenting on a Bottom Up Approach.. Ranking the Pages first and leaving Homepage for the last.
My home page rank hasn't moved though. It is still on Page 2, and between that position, and Bing, Yahoo, G Images and yandex.ru, it has about 450-500 Uniques...

I am not worried though, as this is nothing new, and I continue what I do..
Just wanted to show how Fickle goorgul can be at times :)

The site is only a little more than year old.
It never went through the Sandbox.
And no the site hasn't been penalized. But the effect was just like many of us had in the May Update. It will take me at least a couple months to get back up I guess... because of the Holidays and my year end plans, sigh...

But good thing about these kinds of dance is that I will be drip feeding (Not that) high quality Links to all the inner pages in the next few months and when it comes out of penalty, it will hit 10K uniques/day :D ..

3300 a day average to 500 a day.. lol long tail lol.
Did you notice that on Friday it crossed 4 K lol.... made me so happy on Friday and on Saturday Morning.. Puufff!!!
I am glad, Google Spared the Home page...
This is one of the sites that never went through Sandbox. Most my sites go through Sandbox.. One site was in the Box for almost a year.

PS: If you want I can post updates here on pulling back my ranks... Will Keep you posted.

same thing happened to me on the 19th / 20th odd. they musta been doing some major SERP updates.

I was on 1st page of G for a nice adult term and then BLAM they removed me and i'm no where to be found for that term. 6 year old domain & site. went from 6k uniques a day to 1k D:

it happens tho, i'm sure i'll bounce back to 1st page in 1-2 months or less.

Hmm... If it happened to you too on the same weekend, then there was a Major Uodate maybe.. For me it was the Long tail that was hurt...

I usually do a top down approach for my other sites, and get majority of my traffic to the Home page. None of my other sites are affected.. Even in the same Niche...

And for this site too, the home page is just fine....

What i hate about this is that I need to woprk on hudreds on pages instead of just working on the home page... SHit happens...

Did you stop ranking for your Home page or sub pages?

I had one of my larger domains get slapped. I really wish that there was an alternative to Google and they didn't dictate the rules of SEO.

It was a directory that was on 1st page, ie http://blah.com/dir/ was listed . I still hold the rest of my 1st page positions for other search terms but this recent one was one of the main keyterms I aim for and get traffic from.

freakin Google!

I had 1 site that I was targeting a keyword for a long time jump from #7 to #1 on the 19th without me having done any link building in a few months. Doubled my traffic. Seems like they were up to something that day.

Mine was homepage ranking though

It was indeed a major update on the 19th then.. Looks like they are still working on cleaning up the Long tail.. may update killt a lot of ecom sites.. Now they are targeting other long tails..
But I won't say it was harse "Penalty".. They just moved to second or third pages. All the popular pages. Not like buried deep like the 950

Bring it On Google.....

Would you mind elaborating on this point?

Google apparently had a major Algorithmic Update in May, which many people confuse with the Caffeine, which some google official claimed to be just an Infrastructure update. This was not official, but reading Webmasterworld, and other Search engine forums, including google webmaster forums, Many people reported that their Long tail traffic almost vanished. I know many sites that lost 80% traffic. I was spared, because I mostly target High Volume home page rankings.

Many of the Victims of the May Update were Ecom Sites with thousands of long tail pages..

On the 19th, as confirmed by couple of guys above, apparently there as a major update. My Long tail pages with far better content then a Ecomm page lost their first page ranking.. So, I just thought out loud that, perhaps they are still working on updating the algorithm for ranking long tail keywords..

But then again, my race is not with Google but with my competitor sites..
Just need to work on my Long tail pages even more....

Once you're on page one you need to immediately start getting as many alternative web properties ranking too, it's the best way to make sure you don't get effed in the ay.

I did this with one of my affiliate sites after I was tired of Google playing with my emotions, now whenever I take a dip all my other properties (articles, videos, etc.) are ranking fine so I don't lose as much income and can ride it out. Just saying.

You are quite right. Only this is a Big niche, and I already have 6 other sites in the same niche. I have all the other other sites ranking in the same niche.. Not web 2.0s. This was my whitest site though :), which is funny.

Now this is a Huge Niche and all my "pages" that ranked were on Page 1.. not number 1.. mostly number 5-7.. few number 2-4 .. And I don't track individual pages. This is a Big Niche I am talking..

Also I have a few other sites in the same Niche and in fact two of my other sites did about 10-15% better after this, when I looked at them, after seeing dchuk's response.. This is MY niche :) I have been in this niche for 4 years now. This site was one of my younger ones.

I would think the only reason is that this site is only about 1.4 years old.. Otherwise it has some strong links... I am already buying more HQ links as we speak...

Also most the pages are new... Added them in the past few months after the Home page had aged enough with good links..

I've never built "Bottom Up" as you say, I've always tried to get the domain/home page authority, then when I see it on page 2 and still moving up as new backlinks get indexed I start working on sub pages and spreading the links around and get those pages ranked page 1, usually when I'm done that I'm at least top 5 by then for home page/main keyword. I go back to that, get it to top 3, back to sub pages, long run on sentence here but you get the point. I assume it's not very natural, but for some reason it works really well and most of my backlinks are 100% whitehat. all that to say, what made you try the bottom up approach? have you done it before with success?

Because most of the pages have good volume in themselves... 5000 exact match on average to 100,000... I am already an authority in that niche using multiple site strategy... So I decided to go for a bottom up since the pages themselves have good potential.. Which is why I was doing unto 4k uniques a day even though Most of the pages wre ranked 6-7th .. This will work.. I will continue to get more links... I think I went overboard with Angela and Pauls lol..... Those links are so easy to acquire, I was careless.. Anyway... Need me another 2-3months... Spending some serious dollar before march end..

It has been one month and 10 Days and today all the long tails are back in the Serps. I expect it to dance a bit, but I am hoping that it is Back for good?

In the past Month, I added about 20 new pages.
I spent about 1000 bucks on lots of incontent links, one PR submission, couple blogrolls on relevant sites and few other relevant links..

how the fuck do you get 10 k UVs in a single day with SEO alone?

You building links to all your deep inner pages and getting them to the top 3 or are you going for one two really competitive keywords with loads of searches per day?

are you doing shit load of inner pages targeting long tails and building links to them? seriously how you do it?!!

and you got 450 UV just from a page 2 ranking of one keyword????? WTF?

I go for keywords with millions of searches. Not necessarily exact match because I can build out lots of long tail.

Not a shit load of inner pages.. but about 500? with search volume of 2K to 10k each.

10K uniques a day is not Big time. I have another that do 35 K.. and I haven't been able to beat the number 1-3 sites on about 4 keywords. If I can get to Number 1, I am not sure what the traffic could be.
