Google Introduces Facebook "Competitor"

I mean, rather than putting everything on Google's name, don't you think it is a good idea to just float another brand.

Example being Youtube! Everyone knows its Google - yet it boasts of being a totally different brand.

Nah, google apps, google analytics etc. are doing just fine... They already have orkut as a different brand, I think google's name is a plus...

I've criticized most of Google's "social network" attempts in the past, but I think this one has a shot. It's clean, easy to understand, and Facebook already has a massive amount of people looking for something new. I'll use this over Facebook any day.

Anyone of you think that if Google would've branded it around some other name - it would've appeared more cooler and would've had a more generic mass appeal?

I do. It's kind of hard to articulate but if I were to start posting pictures or statuses or whatever to Google+ I wouldn't feel like I'm participating in something cohesive, it would feel more like I'm just handing over my data, it disappears into "the googles" and then Google Frankenstiens it all back together onto a page whenever I want to "get social".

Facebook has a sense of cohesion to it, I couldn't care less about privacy filters, some might but my Facebook profile is pretty tame, if it's something I wouldn't want the whole world to possibly see I'm not going put it on a public website regardless of whether Google or FB says it's "private".

The niches are totally different from them. Google Apps, Google Analytics are more pointed towards the technical userbase.

Where as the social networking scene needs to be more for the regular people. From my own experience, people need something fancy and Google is still a search engine for a majority of people.

Their brands which were earlier targeted towards the "General" class are all distinct from their main identity viz. Youtube, Blogger, Picasa, boutiques.com, panoramio.com & even vark.com - and almost all of them are pretty successful.

I was invited to try it out. I went to a few pages and it said none of my contacts were on, so what good is it to me? I was thinking of creating some "circles", but without anyone to invite to them, again what's the point?

I'm failing to see what the use of this is. Maybe when they open it up to everyone it will get more interesting.

These brands (except for boutiques, afaik) were brands before google acquired them, meaning people knew and used them before they became part of google. Most of the products that they develop have google's name in them.

"https://services.google.com/fb" has been their forms URL for longer than Facebook has existed.

I know they're trying to connect with your average 20 year old with the characters in these videos, but jesus fuckin christ they overdid it with the "Like", "Um", :::repeat same word 3 times::: dialogue in almost every one of the tour presentation videos..

Are they going for a social network niche: Is this close friend and business facebook?

Yeah, the videos are definitely targeted at your average Facebook user... but if you try the demo it looks pretty good. In fact, if they open this up to Google Apps users, it would be perfect for businesses.

Perhaps it is my hatred of all things facebook that give me an irrational hope for this one.

I know, I know, I'm the fool that said +1s have a chance, but until you take a tour of Google+ you have no right to respond: There are some killer fucking apps in this suite of sharing tools that facebook is now creaming themselves over!

Biggest difference: "Circles." A FAR Superior way to share with ppl; anyone who has ever had the wrong person find something on their facebook wall will fall in love with it instantly.

Biggest Party-tool:"Hangouts" Real time HD Video Chat for groups... Turns a wall into a massive multi-person video chat. -And apparently the loudest person gets the camera pointed at them. (?)

Huddle looks great too, like the way social texting ought to be.

Then there is the integration with mobile devices (Instant upload) that seems like it will be idiot-proof.

Overall what is best about it is what FaceBook can't copy; User Rights are done far better and you won't be letting mom see your naked pics anymore.

For Facebook to copy that part (if possible) they would have to change their existing system so dramatically that it would be like admitting defeat very publically.

(Of course if FB beat google to releasing this 'feature' they might be the originator in the public's perception!)

Anywho, will it Kill FB? No. But it has a chance to grab a shitload of folks who don't like how insecure FB's rights management is, and further like the cool chat, videochat, and upload-to-share features not to be had elsewhere.

It appears to be a far superior system to FB this time. I think it will get some marketshare, like Mac's marketshare v/s the PC only a few years ago.

Dude, I am feeling you on all points. But for fucks sakes, use some paragraphs.
