Google is finally launching an OS

I knew that was coming. I was saying that to someone about a year ago. Google or Cisco will make an OS next.

MS did this to themselves. Would this have ever been made if Vista didn't blow so much?

I'm looking forward to checking this out. It doesn't sound like something I would use everyday, but I was impressed with the Chrome browser.

Because it's windows duh!

Anyways I don't see it becoming too popular, it'll probably be a very watered down version of a linux desktop and users of other more complex distros won't change over. Also windows still dominates the market and with actually releasing what looks like a great successor to XP (finally) in Windows 7 that's not going to change. Maybe it gets some play in the netbook market but there are already so many powerful options I just don't see it happening unless google is shelling out mega dough.

Lastly when everyone is bitching about data mining it might die right there.

Then again Google is pretty good at getting people to use their shit.

Whether Chrome is impressive or not, arent u guys afraid of google's monopolization of interwebs + software + hardware?

The day is not far away when you'll see Google Laptops / Desktops & every fucking hardware you can think of.

As long as Google continues to provide value for their users, they will stay on top. So if there are lots of Google products, then it means Google must be doing a pretty good job.

Why be afraid of that?

Because with one command from a crazed ceo can turn everything off and the whole world turns to chaos. But i wont be using this since its new and bound to have bugs and such. FF all the way

exactly, but once they grow too large, i don't think they might be able to serve their users well enough

IMO something else will happen, a new company might come out that tops google

has always happened in the history of computers (IBM, Microsoft, now Google, whats next?)

Well... Google has been the only company really stepping it up, so don't they deserve it? They are out-marketing everybody hardcore. Putting everyone to shame actually.

Fuck Google though. Pain in my ass.

Sounds like a movie plot. In the real world, the CEO gets fired by the board when he tries to ruin the company.

There will always be alternative browsers. Monopolies are only possible when someone creates them by law. Besides, GBrowser is open source. Anyone can mess with it.

Oh, and I didn't mean this thread as a bad thing, I've been waiting on this for years. I am however a little disappointed that it's basically another linux distro, but I'll take what I can get. I also love Windows 7.

A Linux distro with the backing of a huge, reliable company like Google is exactly what the world needs, and based on their massive success rate it should do well. Hopefully they will be able to make a more compatible and accessible linux distro, bringing it to more mainstream users and then the attention of large software and games companies!

I don't know why you guys are afraid of a company bringing added innovation to the technological world, Microsoft could "flip the switch" screw us all, they won't do it however and Windows is closed source so we have that much more to be afraid of.

A mainstream OS pushed by Google that will be open source excites the fuck out of me, Chrome is already my main browser except when I need FF extensions and if the OS is as stable as Windows it might be a nice thing to put on an extra laptop or whatever.

Well google is just copy and paste good ideas that have been around for a while. So there is no real innovation from google. They are like Microsoft, beside the fact that most storrys about microsoft have stolen software xyz are simply not true.
The problem with google is that they are the biggest privacy issue in the current century. I really would like to see some more action from US Goverment to limit the amount of data google is allowed to gather.
