Sounds like Google is just putting someone in place for plausible deniability to me. Looks real good in court cases.

I know 2 people who work for google, and lets just say, its fucking stressful to work there, some of the shit that they do is beyond logic, but the pay is ridiculously insane.

From what I've heard from all of the compsci people I know at Google, the pay is not that great compared to other companies in the area. It might sound like a lot when you hear the raw salary numbers, but once you factor in the fact that rent is $4,000/mo for a small shoebox, it no longer is very impressive.

Same at Amazon, Microsoft, etc. Starting pay for C# dev fresh out of school doing load balancing bullshit is $120k plus benefits (plus housing assistance) at amazon here in Seattle. But when shit dies at 3am your ass is in there within minutes(if you want to keep the job).

To be honest I feel like Google created a monster that got too big for them to handle... even they don't know how the fuck to rank high on their own engine.

Imagine the amount of programmers (probably thousands) that have worked on their search engine on and off since its inception. The code must be a giant mess! Even the most skilled programmer sometimes creates sloppy code, it's human nature...

Nah someone has the details a company that large doesn't let their products get out of control. There is a giant schematic somewhere that shows how it all works. If a company can't figure out how their product works how the fuck is hiring an SEO going to help?

Maybe it is so complicated that they can't even get their own shit to rank though, but I think this is more of a protection against lawsuits. If they do find wrong doing at Google then they can just fire that guy and say "oops, sorry this one bad guy did all this stuff and we fired him"

Must be tough pressing the "Rank this Google Ventures Website in position 1 Button" all day.

Cheshire's plausible deniability is the first thing that came to mind when I saw this yesterday.

Isn't part of the EU's case about Google using infoboxes/PLAs above organic results, and that case started years ago? Why would Google care about ranking organically? Couldn't they in theory spend $1 on AdWords, and it just gets passed straight through to another division? Obviously they're probably wanting to go after hosting KWs that are competitive, so they're going to hire an SEO who does "exceptional" work, while at the same time giving preferential treatment to their own properties? I mean, if they give special treatment to GV companies like Thumbtack, why not their own?

If you guys got out more you wouldn't have to guess how companies like Google are or what it is like to work for them. They literally have thousands of employees, don't you guys have friends or network at all?

Google pay sounds high if you don't understand tech salaries in the bay area. They pay on the low side in that market, you get benefits/prestige/reliability working for them. It's not a start up that you are afraid will go out of business and the rest of your life it will be one of the main things people notice on your resume.

Google has employed "SEOs" for over 10 years now for various reasons across the company. This is just a click bait article.

Internally at Google Adwords is referred to as "the magic money machine".

Lower end on the spectrum of salaries yeah, I think people should also remember that living expenses in the Bay area are also rather high so it may not seem like the dream job either.

It probably is a very stable job, providing you can deal with the stress and stay employed with them.

I will mention that their IT related positions are rather difficult to get into, I had a friend that had a very nice resume with an immense amount of industry experience, and he didn't make it in unfortunately. On the plus side he ended up getting a better paying job with another company.

Is it really just clickbait? Are they trying to show the world they're being "fair" about rankings by leaving it all automated?

Or is there really some miscommunication between the algorithm department and the whatever department that Google can't even rank their own stuff #1 :P.

Well whoever gets that SEO job... they're set for life. After working SEO for Google, every single business will want to hire you..
