I've got a page optimized for a keyword with 6,600 monthly searches according to Google Keyword Tool. Due to SEO, I've been able to get to the top 5 on the first page out of 2.2million pages.
Why is it that the site is only getting a couple of hits a day when it should be getting at least in the 150s-200s UV/day?

Make sure you have selected "exact match" with the keyword traffic tool and not left it on the default "broad match".

Google's numbers are just an estimate -- one the best ways to find out the true potential of the the keyword phrase is to bid on it with PPC.

That's why I'm not getting enough visitors. The keyword is at 6,600 broad searches/month (Google)

What would be an ideal search volume?

In the upper right hand corner you'll see where it says "Broad," switch it to "exacts."

Also, if you really want to test a keyword, run PPC to it. Make the title of your ad irrelevant (so you have a low CTR) and get it in the 7-9 position. This is the only way you'll get an exact match of search results (based on how many impressions it gets.

I have tested the Keyword tool on 1K to 10K exacts a month and it doesn't seem to be very accurate for low numbers.

ex. I have had keywords that get 10K+ a month exacts on the keyword tool that only bring in 5 uniques a day (and I am #1).

For comparison...

I have a site at #1 in natural results for a term that G keyword tool says gets:

Broad Match
6,600 (global)
5,400 (local)

Exact Match
720 (global)
590 (local)

There are usually 6 or 7 PPC ads showing.

Actual referrals from that listing are around 150/month or an average of about 5/day.

I would expect it to be much higher for 10k+ a month exact searches...

Would Wordtracker be more accurate as a keyword tool in this sense?

Also, when running PPC, what kind of budget do you try the keyword out on? I tried PPC for the specific keyword and a couple of others and received about 1,700 impressions and about 7 clicks which ran me $11.22 in 24 hours.

I haven't found a tool that is very accurate. I only use impressions now-a-days (other then initial research).

Budget depends on the keyword phrase. It could be $50 a click or $0.10 a click. Only you'll know that. Make sure to set the keyword to exact, not phrase, when running the PPC campaign. That will eliminate false impressions. Also, make your ad completely irrelevant. This should keep your CTR down so it should cost you much.

summary:

exact match for keywords

7-9th position

keep title of ad and description of ad completely off topic from keyword.

Well, for example, I ran a short PPC campaign for 24 hours and received 1,700 impressions with only 7 clicks. That's considered pretty low isn't it?

And this was for my main keyword + 3-4 other major keywords in the niche.

Did you use "exact match" for your keywords?

1,700 impressions isn't a ton but you need to let it run at least 7 days to get a better idea of the traffic. Depending on the niche, it could vary A LOT depending on the day of the week (weekends vs weekday)

It's the difference between broad and exact matches, and that Google keyword tool I've found is always 100% accurate..

It was on "broad match"...

I had no idea you could choose whether or not to display your ad on exact match searches only.

Started running a PPC campaign just to see how many impressions I get...

I'm getting 11 impressions under Networks>Search
and 1,973 under Networks>Content

Which one tells me how many impressions I've gotten?
