Google Nexus S..Another fail Marketing Situation

I think the Nexus is a great phone. I don't know why people are saying it is a failure. I agree that they didn't market it as well as they could have, but the people who wanted the first updates and the newest technology were aware of it and are currently using the phone. The only thing I have heard about is that most Nexus 1 owners are bummed that another Nexus is coming out, since they said there wasn't going to be one.

the phone itself is great. There have been many products that have come out throughout the years that were great products, better than the competitors, that ending up "failing" due to lack of sales. No marketing, no huge success. Apple could sell the iphone 5 in a new body with the exact same internal features of the iphone 4 and still have people waiting in lines for hours to get the "new" phone.

Google are a bit of a pussy company though. They don't ever really seem to champion anything or get under people's skin, they want everyone to love them and everyone to use their products. They sit around like passive little fucks, quietly sucking up every scrap of personal information they can without really belittling any of the competition.

If they stuck their neck out and say, alienated or threw hate at Apple/MS/Nokia/whoever, they'd acquire some sort of fanbase and or emotional attachment. They need to polarise opinion in a proper way like Apple. (I'm paraphrasing some shit from Rework for those that picked up on it - sorry emp. ;) )

"Become the Marmite of your industry." -God- :D

Are we all assuming that Google is aiming for their phone to beat the iPhone 4, when that isn't the case?

Google is mainly working to change the status quo and standards in any niche they enter.

For the phone industry, they were wanting to prove that an OS doesn't have to be closed, and that phones can do more in America than they were at the time. We are still a decade behind the Japanese in terms of cellular capabilities. They've been ordering over their phones, controlling their home, watching TV, etc. years before we were.

Google saw Apple having a monopoly in the market on the new Smart Phones when the iPhone came out, and how Apple was "controlling" how it developed, and wanted to shake up the market.

It has. If Android wasn't out, do you really think the FTC would have passed a bill saying that we have the right to jailbreak phones? No. They played a big part in showing the FTC that phones have to be open in order for us to push more innovation and not be confined to just what the manufacturer gets around to providing.

Google doesn't need to be a polar figure in their niches to achieve their goal of shaking up the industry for the better. They are doing just fine.

If I owned Google would I go about it differently? Yes, but then that culture wouldn't be Google.
