Hi everyone, I'm going to build a new computer soon and since I haven't built a computer before I would like to do it as cheap as possible. So if you have any spare computer parts (I mean anything), then shoot me a PM. I'm looking for motherboards, cpus, psu, graphics cards, cases, fans, cd-rw, dvd-rw, hdd etc.

I live in the UK and I would rather buy someone living in Europe and who has a decent post count/itrader. I'm willing to buy, but I also make landing pages, banners, headers etc. so a swap for something like that would be perfect.

he's saying you can get a new computer for $200 - $300, so you're going to end up paying as much in postage trying to piecemeal the thing together. go buy a used computer advertised on craigslist (or your uk equivalent), take it apart, then put it back together. done. $50 max. knowledge gained.

The point is to make a computer which has the specifications that I need, not just to learn although that is part of it. It must be a good computer, but doesn't have to be amazing. I will probably install Kalyway so I can run both Vista and Leopard on it so it will be kinda like having a Mac, except I built it. I might some more parts on Craiglist for sure.

For anyone not familiar, kallyway, ideb, atkos, etc are hacked versions of Mac OSX to run on non-apple branded hardware.

Larry if that's your intention you needed to specify it clearly in the OP, since you're going to have to get a specific motherboard, and specific parts in order for OSX to have driver support, you can't just throw together whatever "good". As such you're going to have to list here, specifically which compatible parts you need.

Yeah, don't worry I researched what I need to use, but most things can stay the same: cd-rw, hdd, processor. The only real problems will arise with the motherboard. I was just wondering if anyone had any spare components in general since I may use them in other projects.

Anecdotally speaking, it's hard lately to sell anything at all and you can get things on the cheap from Craig's List and other local classifieds. I had some really quality stuff to sell, and let several things go for incredibly cheap (and then I had to drive 20 miles and deliver something myself). The market for sales is so ridiculous right now, don't overspend or waste money on postage.

When you do searches in the classifieds or ebay, etc, look for the model# plus either "parts", "broken" or "salvage". I used to do really well buying-fixing-reselling people's "broken" xboxes, which were usually caused by a bad drive or PSU.

Because a new computer can be had for $200-$300, most people (average users) try to just get what they can for their "broken" one and get it out of the house. If it's out of warranty, it will probably cost them the same to get it serviced, and otherwise, it's about as useful to them as a doorstop.

Yeah, thanks for the advice
