Not strictly war, but Tropic Thunder is a good laugh, especially Tom Cruise's character "I will fuck you up!"

I can help you out with this.

Bridge Over the River Kwai
Tora Tora Tora - local guy flew his warbird in this one.
Force Ten From Navarone
Sands of Iwo Jima - The Duke
The Great Escape - OK McQueen movie
Dirty Dozen
Das Boot - not bad
They Were Expendable - another Duke flick
Hell in the Pacific
U-571
A Bridge to Far
Glory - not a classic yet, but very good

If you want to waste time reading the Rob White WWII books are very good.

Neither of these are great but both are well worth the rental. Not a whole lot of action in either one, as they're much more cerebral, character study films that happen to have war as a backdrop.

Forget Saving Private Ryan, we all know it's good... How about some lesser known or classic war movies?

No documentaries.

Please share. I'll start...

The 9th Company (Russian)
Stalingrad (German)
Come and See (Russian/German)
Paths of Glory
Cross of Iron
Waltz with Bashir (Israeli)
Beaufort (Israeli)

Stalingrad is an awesome show! If you like it and you speak/understand German try to get yourself a copy of the mini-tv series "Unsere Muetter/Unsere Vaeter" that was just shown in Germany.

Cross of Iron is great. Even though ironically I liked the sequel a bit better.

Die Bruecke is one of the earliest German movies made after WW2 and is brutal to watch. Not so much the special effects but the story in itself.
