Guy Threatens Us & I'm Annoyed At MYSELF

I got that you are sensitive and could be made to react to negative comments. You need to learn to let it go, laugh them off or diffuse it. Watch the video, I am here to help :)

No I'm just messing around man! I swear I did watch the video, and I was actually surprised after the initial ass chew you laid out, hence the 'cheers fellas' :)

But ok, thanks all, appreciate your input!

Imo, forget MMA,

but get some basic training in boxing, thai boxing (for the elbows and knees) and some kind of wrestling/judo so you have some kind of takedown attack/defense.

not worth it man, from someone who has been in more scuffles than I can count, fuck it. Ive been very very lucky to not have been put in jail for a lot of the bullshit i used to be invlolved with and stupid times i clocked someone. Sounds stupid but take a breath and forget about it, or let him hit u first with people watching. But the truth is if the cops come, you would both be taken to bookings. Not worth it

Ok, I'll chime in.

First rules of survival when threatened. (Physically that is.)

1.) RUN LIKE HELL if you can and just get the FUCK out of the situation. Avoidance at all costs is the first and primary action.

2.) Fight if you must. Be sure to use ANY WEAPON available to you!! Remember, the ONLY Rule in the "Grown Up World" of fighting is to WIN and/or SURVIVE IT!!

Alright OP, it is NOT your job, duty, or responsibility to TEACH anyone anything. PERIOD!!

From your story it "sounds" like the situation got handled correctly without much incident.

So, let it go!!

Now, get on with your life and remember...Dignity doesn't pay the bills or keep YOUR ASS ALIVE!!

P.S. I took Tiger and Preying Mantis style Kung Fu for 6 years while growing up and kick boxed in the ring for 3 years. I then later severed in the United States Marine Corps.

I had a Concealed weapons permit for over 15 years and carried every day.

Only pulled my weapon out twice in that time and NEVER had to fire it!!

I have NOT been in a Physical altercation where "I" fought back in over 25 years now and I'll be 49 next week.. (Two times I have been in places that I should not have and CHOSE to NOT fight back when attacked and only defended. Bloody lip was the worst I got from either incident where I was out numbered at least 5 to 1. Since I was ALONE in those situations, I would have either been DOG PILED and BEATEN BADLY or been arrested due to the testimonies of "The Locals.")

Call me a PUSSY if you want, but even COPS won't cuff/arrest me with less than 4 of them around.

Take what I've said as you will.

Alright.....what the hell?!

In any fight situation you have FOUR things at your disposal or to keep in mind.

1.) Human resources. That would include YOU and any friends with you and your opponent and any friends that they may have.

Now, you should know your own fighting capabilities as well as you friends abilities.

You MUST assume that ALL of your opponents can fight like Jet Lee or Jackie Chan.

2.) Natural resources. Do you have a beer bottle in your hand? Does your opponent? What is near by that you can grab and use quickly? Is there say an Iron Railing or Table near by that you can SMASH them into? Are you near a busy road where you can push them into on coming traffic?

3.) Time. This will be a BIG factor in your strategy. If only 1 of your 3 friends can fight worth a damn along with yourself, then you only have TWO functional weapons and TWO HUMAN SHIELDS for the battle. If the opponent also has 3 friends then you HAVE to assume that it is now your 2 against his 4. This means that you have LESS time to WIN or GET AWAY!!

4.) Space. (Physical surroundings.) Are you in a bar with a bunch of tables around? If so, then KICKS might have to be ruled out. Is the guy near the end of the bar where you could corral him in behind it to RESTRICT his options for fighting back? You get the idea.

Physical fighting 101:

You should always fight in Spheres. (I was taught Circles, but Spheres are more accurate to me.)

Point of Contact Sphere would be grappling. Hands on each other. In this close proximity things like your Shoulder and Head can be used to strike. Stomps where you use the edge of your shoe to RAKE down the shin before CRUSHING bones in the foot. Hands & Hips can be used to take the opponent off balance.

Inner Sphere would be any distance beyond Point and to the length of a right or left cross punch. So, this will encompass using your elbows and knees as well.

The Outer Sphere is where Kicks come in. NEVER....I repeat...NEVER use a kick ABOVE YOUR OWN WAIST HEIGHT!!! Optimally you want to use you kicks in a downward strike so that you can ADD your body weight to the strike and if the opponent moves you aren't left open. Your foot will just travel to the ground and you'll keep your stability.

Knees (The top or side.) are the best target for kicks with ANKLES being the next best and Groin strikes being 3rd.

If you wind up having to Duke it out, as FAST as you can analyze whether the opponent is a Grabber/Tackler (Point Sphere), Puncher (Inner Sphere), or Kicker (Outer Sphere.) and then STAY OUT OF THAT RANGE during the confrontation. Fight from the distance that the opponent is NOT comfortable with.

Grabber: Keep punching and kicking him. Keep him away from you.

Puncher: Kick him or Grab him and take him to the ground.

Kicker: Move in so that he can't use those legs.

A lot of people learn Combos like a jab followed by a left or right cross. Well, say you throw that jab and the opponent steps back, now he is OUT OF THE INNER SPHERE of your upcoming right cross. So, you would NOT throw the right cross but instead use a REVERSE kick of some sort. (Maybe a cross-over side kick. But that would not have as much power.)

If you threw the right or left cross when he stepped back you would now be open to be hit.

If he stepped into you after the jab then an elbow, knee, or take down would be the best bet over the left or right cross.

Your forehead is THE BEST defense of a punch to the face. It's also the FASTEST block available to you.

A finger strike to the eyes if done right can end a fight quickly. An upward palm strike to the nose will SHUT THEIR EYES and flood them with tears. Either of these two strikes could very well give you the time needed to get away from a confrontation. (The Nose strike and putting cartilage into their brain and killing them is a myth.)

A half fist to the throat can also end a fight quick and give you time to get away.

Break the opponent's knee and it should be over as well.

Also, always wear a BELT and keep a pocket knife if possible. They can be of more help than you would imagine.

The keys in the hand with the keys protruding from your hand while walking to your car is NOT just for WOMEN!!

Nor is having Pepper Spray or a Taser device.

In reality MMA just means being equally bad at wrestling, jits and boxing.

MMA is a ruleset. Today ufortunately, the UFC has a monopoly on MMA, which means people train for UFC rules which is a very bad thing to do with all the wrestling and half assed shoots because there are no stomps and soccer kicks when an opponent is down.

Now, had MMA been like Pride FC, you would have had a point. In those fights, guys did what they could to stay off the ground, because the ground is a very dangerous place to be.

The practical application of MMA is therefore not very good. You're better off learning how to punch properly and then add a bit of judo or wrestling to avoid being taken down or to throw someone. BJJ is very dangerous in this regard, in that it teaches you to fight on the ground, where in a real fight you will get stomped by bystanders or have your head knocked open on concrete. Bad idea.

Yes BJJ is not suitable for anything other then a mat, although with 2 or 3 years of BJJ no one is going to keep you on the ground and getting to your feet will be a million times simpler then if you never trained in it.

People think that BJJ is just fighting off your back, well it is, but it is more then that. People spend a whole year some place before they even work on submissions. Reversals and positioning is the foundation of BJJ and essential to getting off the ground in a street fight.

After this though, ya, people dont really need to work the butterfly guard on the street.

I dont agree that MMA means equally bad at all 3. Well not that it would be less effective for pure self defense and self confidence. I would rather work out with guys who are just ok at all 3 but practice with a full resisting opponent allowing practice to go wherever it goes then to train with a very good boxer or wrestler.

The biggest transistion people in mma or boxing have trouble with is not hitting with a closed fist to the head. Hand pads out of plywood will train this in short order.

So this asshole is quite shorter then me, slightly stocky and I'm willing to bet I'd have given him a good run for his money. I've been in a few fights to know this much.

You must be very young or very inexperienced with people. A lot of guys look as if they couldn't hold their own in a fight, but could easily kill men larger than themselves. I know a few. One is very good with a knife, which he keeps hidden.

Of course, men with that type of training don't get into bar fights. First, they're too refined for that type of childish nonsense. Second, they know that they're not the only ones who know how to kill.

They leave the bar fights to children who don't appreciate the risk. Time to grow up before you get hurt.

Ok, I'll chime in.... Awesomeness

yes yes yes. Also, very basic but I would add that you should always be aware of your footing, keep a low center of gravity so that you won't throw yourself off balance going for the hit (and also if you are hit you won't be knocked to the ground, which is NOT where you want to be)

Be aware of your body position, your goal is to present the smallest target available, protecting your face and your core. I have a helluva right so my right foot is back, my left foot is forward my left fist is high covering my face. My right arm is close to my body but my right hand is also near my face. I want to fight from this position because my torso is hidden behind my left shoulder and elbow and being hit there is much preferable to being hit in the stomach, much less in the face. (which is protected by my hands in this position)

That left hand will push him back and block his hits. A good block won't just absorb the hit, it will take his body's momentum and redirect it in a direction he wasn't expecting to go. Block with your wrist and then push outwards or inwards in a wide circle. I want to catch him off balance so I can connect the right, do some damage and get him on the ground.

+1 for a knife and +100 for a gun. A knife is only as good as your close range fighting skills, a good fighter can easily take a knife from someone that is overconfident because of his "advantage" but a gun.. if you have a solid draw you can end it before it begins providing he's not already on top of you.

Sam Harris wrote a great piece on fighting. It's worth reading, especially for the wannabe badasses around here. Here's the link:

The Truth about Violence : 3 Principles of Self-Defense : Sam Harris

I once knew an experienced martial artist who decided to walk across Central Park late at night. He was aware of the danger, but he thought “I have a black belt in karate. Why shouldn’t I be able to walk wherever I want?” As it happened, this rhetorical question was answered almost immediately: My friend hadn’t ventured more than a hundred yards into the darkness of the park before he was confronted by three men, one of whom plunged a hypodermic needle into his thigh without a word. Our hero bolted and escaped, otherwise unharmed, but he spent the next three months wondering whether he had been infected with HIV, hepatitis, or some other blood-borne disease. (He was fine.) The lesson: Whatever your training, you needn’t be foolish.

Guns for show, knives for a pro, hands for a ninja!

Clearly he's a douche-bag so...

Defuse situation, offer your you hand out to shake your attackers hand, when he reaches forward grab his hand, pull him forward as hard as you can while striking his jaw as fucking hard as possible with your elbow.. Now, he's gona have a little kip on the floor while you head home.

Rinse
Repeat
???
Profit!

True. And good advice if you know there's going to be a fight and you can't get out of it. The problem is, if you throw the first punch without being attacked, you're probably going to be the one who's going to pay in the end from a legal standpoint, not the guy who was just defending himself.

BTW, does anyone know California law? What happens legally to 2 people in a fight?

Do each of them immediately go to jail?
Does the attacker get hit with a felony?

Illinois, a friend was working on a house for someone. The person had hired a guy and the guy was a no show. Well, he showed up when my friend was there. Started giving him all manner of crap. He was cussing at him, getting in his face and telling him he was going to kick his ass. My friend punched him in the face and he went down.

Someone called the cops and when they got there they told my friend he was going to jail. He said "no I'm not, he is". Explained the situation that he had been threatened, was concerned for his safety and defended himself.

The other guy, who never touched him went to jail.

yesssss. Surprise is so powerful. I was attacked in the park a few years ago, when I was still in the US. I was crouched down fiddling with my bike's chain on the side of the bike path, broad daylight. A man came up behind me, I never heard him. He grabbed my arm, started pulling/dragging me. Instead of trying to have a tug of war with him I turned my body toward him (he wasn't expecting that) hugged both of his legs right below the knees and pulled. He fell hard on his ass and it was enough time for me to get the bike between us. I took my dog spray from it's holster on the handlebars and by the time he was up I was standing safely behind my bike, spray pointed at him. I figured if the spray in the face didn't stop him then I'd hold onto my bike as long as I could to make it harder for him to get me out of there. He took off running.

This is one of two times that I felt my life was in danger and it's funny because today I carry a gun but in neither of the situations when I was in real danger would I have been effectively able to use a gun without the risk of being disarmed because they were already too close when I realized I had a problem. Moral of the story: Eyes open.
