Hacker is hitting my financials and blackmailing. What can I do?

You need to tell us the full story here. You're leaving a lot of things out. I'd make a list of what didn't jive with your story, but too much to think about, I'm simply going to say:

1. The story

I don't know what you think is missing from the story. Anyway, the story does not matter. The point is my financial information has been stolen, and now I am being blackmailed. This isn't a soap opera where you need every detail.

But just to show how simple the story is...

1) This person was a tech acquaintance from 2 to 3 years ago.
2) This person managed my servers for my online operations.
3) This person was eventually fired from server admin duty due to poor work.
4) 2 years go by.
5) I wake up, my email is hacked.
6) As the day goes on, my other online accounts are hacked (because they have my primary email).
7) I check server logs for unauthorized access. I retrieve an IP address.
8) Traced the IP. Address looks familiar.
9) Think back to my old server admin who lived in the exact place, compared IP's and they match.
10) Contacted this person.
11) Person admits to the hack, demands $600 or he will sell my financial information.

End of story. I'm not trying to be put on trial here. I have documents proving most of what I say, but I am not about to be giving out data that I may need for future litigation just to make people here believe me. I am looking for sound advice as to what my options may be. I am sure someone else must have been hacked, or had their financial data stolen before.

Even if the police won't do anything, you should be able to get some sort of civil legal remedy, like an injunction.

That way you can have his ass thrown in jail for contempt if he carries on, AND you can pursue him for costs and take his house off him. Much easier to arrange than waiting for the police to get their act together, as long as you have the money to outlay for a lawyer.

AFAIK, Canadian law uses the base as English law, which is what I'm basing my suggestion on.

However, if you do that, it's VITAL you don't do or threaten anything against him beforehand. Otherwise he can plead defense that you had 'dirty hands'.

So you have his ip and proof he accessed your server, you have his name from previous dealings and you have him admitting to doing it all?

Why haven't you called the police yet? Not the FBI. Call the RCMP where he lives. Presumably they can act because what he is doing is illegal in their jurisdiction.

You act like this guy is in Nigeria and can't be touched. He's in Canada, just call the police and at minimum take advice from them (i'm sure they've come across this before) instead of folks on wf.

Contact the regular police (in your town) and tell them that you are being blackmailed. Contact his ISP's security division and request that they not discard any records for his account, since you may need them for an investigation.

I told you not to tell anyone. New price is $650 and a years supply of kool-aid.

Don't mess with me man!

contact your local news, the FBI will care once its on the news that they didnt help you

Revenge is not the way to go here. You've contacted the FBI and IC3 already, and that is a good enough reason not to get involved.

I thing I would kill someone if something like that happened to me...and I don't even make any money yet....I would go pulp fiction on them

Person admits to the hack, demands $600 or he will sell my financial information.

And, It you give $600 to end this shit he will ask for more and will continue blackmailing you for more money.

Open a complaint with the RCMP, mate. Your contention that "nobody cares" is strictly bullshit, and makes me think this whole thread is just that.

The FBI isn't going to care unless the losses/damages are over $5000. I learned that from an FBI agent. They're just too backed up with higher priority cases. Call his local Police department and notify all the news agencies in his area and your own.

Personally, if it was me I'd catch a flight to Canada tomorrow and show up on his doorstep ... you know ... so we could "talk about it". Just me, him and a Louisville slugger... blackmail only works if the victim doesn't know who's black mailing them.
