On the firing line
I want to upgrade my power supply and add an external video card. How do I figure out if I can stuff a particular PSU into my machine?

I've got a Gateway DX4710-05, it comes stock with a 300 watt power supply. I want to install this one:

Rosewill.com - Power, Power Supply, Performance Series (500W - 600W), RP600V2-S-SL - It's a 600 watt power supply

and I would like to install this graphics card:

Newegg.com - EVGA 512-P3-N871-AR GeForce 9800 GTX(G92) 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards

The software that prompted all this is:

Great Planes RealFlight G4.5 System Requirements

So, now I'm trying to figure out if my above choices will work with my machine.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Are you hoping to run Mirror's Edge or what?

That should all fit. It's an ATX case, right? The power supply is ATX, so it should fit.

Graphics card is PCIe, and the board supports PCIe. You should be fine.

Not sure what Mirror's Edge is. I'm just trying to upgrade to the latest and greatest version of a RC aircraft flight simulator.

I've got version 4 and it runs decently with the integrated graphics, but 4.5 won't even run.

Thanks AlexB! I'm glad to hear that this should work. :D

Upgrading to that card to run a flight simulator is like hunting rabbits with bunker busters.

Yeah, you should be good.

Nice!! I'm always up for a little overkill!

Although, Nebraska seems to take issue with prairie dog hunting using a Barrett M107. Hmmm....

Mike that card is definitely overkill, same goes for the PSU.
There's no reason it shouldn't work, just make sure your mobo supports PCI-Express 2.0
