I've heard a lot of bitching about PayPal scamming people out of money. Way more than normal, really. I've been wondering if it's time for me to switch over just to mitigate the risk.

Anyone else been screwed over by PayPal? Did you switch to another company? What are your experiences?

I've been screwed over by PayPal. Buyer opened a $50 claim and PayPal charged it 3 times after I hit "Issue a Refund". I can't switch though. 98% of my clients only use PayPal. :/

You can't quit paypal if you're in AM/SEO. I guess you could but it would make your life hell. I send/receive an average of 5 transactions a day via paypal.

That being said...fuck paypal. But it's a necessary evil >.<
You can't stop paypal, you can only hope to contain him.....

When complaining about Paypal, most people leave out a part of the story.

Like us, Paypal is in it for the money and they are going to make profitable decisions. I don't see an incentive for Paypal to close/freeze accounts without just cause.

People are going to be more vocal about Paypal's actions because, for most people, they are crucial to running an online business and there aren't any comparable alternatives if you do get axed.

If you want to reduce the risk of losing your Paypal account, then I suggest you do the following:

  • Don't fake your Account Information.
  • If someone requests a refund, issue it. Fighting it puts you on Paypal's radar and it's rarely profitable to fight the refund.
  • Keep a solid bankroll. You don't want a string of chargebacks/refunds/whatever to push your account into the red. Once again, this puts you on Paypals radar. It only takes so many times before they decide dealing with you isn't worth it.
  • If your doing something shady, do it through another payment processor.

I use PayPal for pretty much everything and haven't ran into a problem yet. If you aren't doing anything shady then it is pretty much fine. I've had a few chargebacks but primarily because of stolen credit cards. That's not the fault of PayPal.

In Soviet Russia... PayPal quits you!

If you think this kind of stuff doesn't happen with other payment processors your kidding yourself

Don't hate the Player(PayPal)... Hate the Game(Scammers)

I have a hard time believing everybody that PayPal screwed over was doing something shady. There's a whole lot of vociferous complainants who are more than happy to put their name on the line for that.

It's more plausible to believe that PayPal would avoid the hassle of disputes by screwing sole proprietors and small businesses that don't have a lot of clout or impact on their bottom line.

Use it for buying stuff on the internet when I'm too lazy to put in my credit card, but I wouldn't try to carry a balance on it.

Can't really quit it, have too many customers who prefer to pay through it. However I try to go through my own merchant account as much as possible.

Plus it's great for buying.

Cant do it although we may want to. The world is far too fucked up thinking PayPal is the only service provider out here.

I thought you were talking about account's getting frozen or terminated.

You're talking about people getting screwed in disputes?

If that's the case, then try to reduce your exposure to disputes as well as factor the losing disputes into your business model (i.e: set higher profit margins).

Unless your business model involves your receiving a small number of very large transactions, then you shouldn't bother with disputes.. just refund and be done with it.

All companies have to deal with bad debt, not just those who use Paypal.
