Earthquake induced tsunamis affected southern Chile, Hawaii, Japan, the Philippines, eastern New Zealand, south east Australia and the Aleutian Islands. Some localised tsunamis severely battered the Chilean coast, with waves up to 25 metres (82 ft). The main tsunami crossed the Pacific Ocean at a speed of several hundred km/h and devastated Hilo, Hawaii, killing 61 people, allegedly due to their failure to heed warning sirens. Hilo's position in the bay caused a cumulative bounce of tsunami waves far more destructive to Hilo than to other more exposed areas of Hawaii. Tsunami waves as high as 10.7 metres (35 ft) were recorded 10,000 kilometres (6,000 miles) from the epicentre, several as far away as Japan and the Philippines.

United States Senators Daniel Inouye and Daniel Akaka issued a joint press release urging calm, noting that this is the first tsunami evacuation in Hawaii since 1994.[48] City Managing Director Kirk Caldwell is serving as the acting mayor of Honolulu, Hawaii's capital, during the tsunami evacuation in the absence of Mayor Mufi Hannemann.[49]
Warning sirens were sounded throughout the state, as hotels in Waikiki began evacuating tourists from hotels at 6 a.m. People in tall buildings were being encouraged to evacuate vertically, that is, move to a higher floor (above the third floor).
Waves measuring nine feet high were predicted to strike Hilo Bay on the Big Island of Hawai'i at 11:05 a.m. local time (2105 GMT)[50], but by 11:18 a.m., major receding and waves had not been reported on the shoreline but drops over 10 m (33 ft) and ten wave crests up to 20 m (66 ft) were recorded offshore southeast of Honolulu by a bouy, and discoloration was reported by 11:20 a.m., with the first waves expected to hit minutes later, but it was reported that the first wave may arrive an hour after the initial predictions, with the strongest waves possibly several hours later (CNN).
What the fuck? Richmond isn't a couple meters below sea level dummy. The land there averages one meter ABOVE sea level. Also, it would be nearly impossible for the lower mainland to be hit by a tsunami since it is completely protected from the open ocean by Vancouver Island.
this tsunami is FAIL

^^^I concur. Big let down.
I thought it was hilarious that even though nothing was obviously going to happen, CNN was still trying to sensationalize it and say how there was huge danger coming. Meanwhile there are people walking their dogs on the beach and shit haha.
