Stephen Hawking: 'Transcendence looks at the implications of artificial intelligence - but are we taking AI seriously enough?' - Science - News - The Independent

Hawking also has said that if there is alien life capable of landing here: we're Fucked. Perhaps that gives some insight into his psyche, perhaps not.

I feel we will never turn back btw, that human nature is such that even in the face of almost certain annihilation we march forward. After all, we are "the star in this movie, we can not die". This is not to say I think AI will be our end, but it might be. "The Matrix has you..."

What do you guys think?

I think we're going to destroy ourselves way before a toaster or an alien liquefies me for fuel.

Ppl killin too many ppl.

I think the Chinese will beat AI to the punch with genetic engineering.

Other intelligence and educational attainment related genes and the possibility of an IQ of 550 with genetic engineering

If they are able to create genetically "perfect" humans, they could have an IQ of about 550. That would be about equal to AI level machine intelligence in organic form. Those kids would probably be ruling the world before they were out of diapers.

What's most interesting is the genetic engineering could be tested in a few years... while we may still be decades away from a proper AI.

What's your estimated mpg?

My car runs on old vegetable oil I steal from McDonalds locations. I'm hoping to make the planet smell like farts enough that aliens won't want to come and kill us.

Everyone has to do their part for the planet. Against alien invasion.

Also - realistically, if aliens were going to come eat us or enslave us - they would be among us and look like us to gather intelligence first. It's like any other war around the planet - you don't go in with sticks and rocks and hope they don't have guns.

I don't own a tinfoil hat, but if aliens WERE into our planet - it's logical that this is what they'd do.

inb4 reptilians kidnap me and this is my last login

Unless they view us as we view an ant pile. Actually step on it, kill 2 billion people making the rest of us scatter, and "whoops, sorry! didn't see you there!"

Yeah, I'm hoping they want to use us as batteries or something. If they just want our dirt because it's a commodity somewhere else - we fucked.

What does that mean, sounds like you're mixing Hollywood and reality.

Andrew it means that many people feel they can do dangerous things and not die. Its a metaphor that I probably didn't setup properly - in movies the star Never dies, and we are all "the star" in our own little motion picture called our lives.

Check out "Her" - A Spike Jonze movie with Scarlet Jo as the voice of an AI operating system... Extremely realistic:

Excepting for the hollywood ending, I really think there is a lot of realism in this vision of AI in our future... They may outpace us eventually though; who knows in the long run.

Perhaps by the time they're so smart that they have no desire to talk to us anymore, we'll have made ourselves so smart with implants that we can keep up and be on the same level with them.

If our civilization were a single person, it would have like 9 terminal diseases that could kill it at any time (asteroid or comet impact, gamma ray burst, pandemic, etc). The only possible cure would be A.I, which could either make it immortal, or kill it instantly.

I think Hawking should stick to doing his fucking imaginary space math or whatever the fuck it is and shut the fuck up about computer science.

Where are you getting this figure from?

Yeah, I'm hoping they want to use us as batteries or something. If they just want our dirt because it's a commodity somewhere else - we fucked.

The only things they could really get here that can't be found in abundance (to our knowledge) elsewhere would be chlorophylls and proteins.

That said, since both of those compounds can be generated through artificially induced biological processes there's no reason a species advanced enough to traverse the universe would rather make the trip all the way here to 'harvest' as opposed to just growing their own.
