For the people who are self-employed.

How do you guys get your medical insurance and how much do you pay for it?

I am asking this because I will need one in the future and I'm not really sure where I can acquire it.

Thanks in advance :)

start researching HSAs...
Some major points to know about HSAs are: (ripped from daveramsey.com)

  • It is a major medical policy with a large deductible and a low premium.
  • An excellent way to control your monthly premiums while saving for any future costs you may have.
  • You can save up to about 70% on your premium as you are saving money that can be used tax-free on medical expenses.
  • The amount saved in your HSA rolls over from year to year, allowing that savings to gain interest or investment earnings.
  • You can take money out of this account tax- and penalty-free whenever needed for medical expenses. If it's used for anything else, you pay taxes and a BIG penalty.
  • This money must be used for medical, dental and vision care; however, dental and vision payments don't count toward your deductible.

Do you guys deduct your health insurance on your taxes? I read it one time, but thought it was BS...

Kaiser Permanente is another affordably priced option for anyone in the US who lives in an area they are at.

here is the deal. I can count the times I have been sick on 1 hand. yet I kept paying for health insurance even though I thought it was a waste of money. then about a month ago I really needed it and spending that $2400 a year saved me hundreds of thousands of dollars!
When you are young you just don't think it will happen to you but then BAMM you are sitting in a hospital with tubes everywhere, taking 37 pills a day that are the size of your fist! You want the best care you can get and without the insurance the cost is coming out of your pocket!

If you have a local chamber of commerce, see them. They can get you group rates, and you just have to join their organization (probably $100 - $200 / year).

I have top-of-the-line health & dental for my family, and I pay a bit over $10,000 / year.

Got Aetna, $68/mth, but I'm a young, health male specimen.

And yes, if you are SE health insurance is tax deductible.

Thanks everyone.

The problem is that I got a liver transplant about 6 years ago and many insurance companies may not accept me.

wow.. i didnt know health insurance was only low $100 a month, i've been putting it off..

thats pretty cheap.

What I had..

When I paid for my own insurance, was Tonik - through blue cross.

Its for people in their twenties. I at the time I got it - was 24 and paying
around 80 dollars a month for dental/vision. They have lower plans as well.
