I'm VERY surprised the 1and1 people fucked you over.

I'm VERY surprised that you'd say that or push people into the well. Have you been living in a cave or what? Search around and you will see more horror stories than horror movies listed on imdb.

I've been with iWeb.ca for more than 2 years now, great support and network uptime. I also have one box with Steadfast.net, support is awesome as well, sometimes I send them an email at like 2 in the morning and get a reply within 2 minutes.

Never had problems with this two hosting providers, you might want to look into them.

Sorry to hear that but you get what you pay. If you need top-notch support, start using dedicated servers from PowerVPS.

Yeah I have heard crap about 1and1 many times but since they were dedicated boxes that we manage ourselves is was no biggy that the support sucks because we never use it. I can tell you 1and1 has some good servers, cheap, with lightning fast connnections. All means nothing if they can turn everything off in a minute with no warning though I guess.

It's not really a support issues as much as a fucked up policy on how they handle their DMCA email. I have used RackSpace which some consider the best support in the business but they fucked me over when it came to DMCA as well so it's not a simple fix nor as easy as saying it's just 1and1. Hosting companies often overreact to DMCA's and it's a constant problem with my clients since they sell stuff cheap and that's the manufacturers only way of going after them. Half the time DMCS's aren't even legit anyway, but scared companies freak out over them.

Bottom line is I need to look into offshore hosting I think.

I've got an account w/ 1and1 and it probably the shittiest web host I've ever used. Good luck getting everything sorted out.

Cheap is not something you want for a dedicated server. $10 - $20 is not something you want to save on dedicated server when you are hosting lot of websites.

If you want to be safe from DMCA, then get a Canadian server at netelligent.ca and you can get a cheap custom setup from them. Hide your domain registration information if you are in US.

Ouch, sorry to hear about the disaster. I have had a business of mine go straight down the tubes in a similar manner due to a frozen domain account. All of my domains were turned off and my clients were not too happy. It pretty much destroyed my business.

If you are looking for a good dedicated server hosting company I would look into The Planet.

I have used them for years and at one time I had over a dozen quad xeon servers with them. I used the budget section called server matrix. they have a 99.9% SLA and give you tons of bandwidth. Support is second to none.

Funny story, when I sold my hosting business back in 2003 I had over a dozen high end servers. I canceled all of them. Due to some kind of accounting glitch the servers stayed up in my name and were accessible for over 8 months. Yes, 8 MONTHS! I had no idea until one day they sent me a letter saying we are bringing your servers down, 8 months after the fact. Talk about a goof, they must have lost a lot of money on that one. To the tune of about $25,000.

That sucks man.
Unfortunately, the lawyers I know don't deal in this.

If you were here, I'd recommend Slater Gordon. They're mostly ambulance chasers, but they've got lawyers that specialise in everything. Never had legal problems that leave Australian borders though, so I can't help you out on this one.

I hope this crap gets sorted for you man. 1and1 has an uncanny ability to piss off customers like none other.

I wouldn't wipe my ass with 1and1-branded toilet paper.

Thanks to everyone who helped out yesterday. It was one of the most stressful days I have had in a long time. Got it all squared away and all of my servers back up around 6:30pm last night, for now anyway. I found some good tips, a good local laywer who knows his shit when it comes to the internet and I have a few good offshore hosting recommendations to start looking into. Thanks again to everyone who helped out on here, IM, and Twitter yesterday.

I'd sue for damages, they had no right to shut down multiple servers for 1 complaint.

Don't let them get away with it or they won't think twice about doing it again.

People are amusing if I was going to rent a building I'd have a phone number and talk with my landlord so they knew who I was. Who runs a large viable business on hosting that sucks and wouldn't call you first? If you're going to run a real business and have customers get rackspace or verio don't fuck with the nickel and dime companies. Just my opinion.

Yeah well RackSpace was even worse about this sort of issue so so much for that theory. I was with RackSpace for years and after a few DMCA letters received they shut down my server and they weren't even going to let us get our files off it, EVER! After a long fight I got our stuff but it took a lot of legal threatening etc so everying isn't as cut and dry as it seems, especially not with copyright and the DMCA. If you haven't been there you wouldn't know what I am talking about because it's not a simple issue of which hosting companies have better support, all hosting companies freak out to some degree over this, the sad part is the complaint doesn't even have to be validated.

This isn't a case of well you should have known 1and1 sucks or whatever bla bla bla. We knew all about 1and1 going in and most people you hear bitching are on shared hosting, they have no support for shared hosting it's crap. Dedicated is another story and their servers are very fast and stable which is why we used them. It's impossible to predict how any hosting company would react to multiple DMCA notices because at some point they can be held liable and open themselves up to lawsuits if they dont' take action. Bottom line is they overreacted big time but they weren't the first and won't be the last, offshore hosting is where we are heading now and that's really the only way to protect yourself against this sort of thing completely no matter how much you pay for your hosting or how highly rated they come...
