Hang in there OP. Just remember that no matter how bad your life gets, my life is probably worse.

Good luck mate, you'll be right!

You do realize that the unemployment benefits you'll be collecting is money you already paid in, right? That's not relying on the system, that's getting your fucking money back from the government.

SO FUCKING THIS^^^

It ain't charity, dumbass. File for it NOW.

And get your food stamps from we president now too if you can.

My advice: Stop playing the SEO game. Look into media buying, social (POF/FB), mobile or cloaking on FB or Adwords. Do it before you wake up one morning with absolutely 0 income from your sites and are not able to do shit to bring it back.

Save up around 10k form any random job and then spend it all systematically testing/split-testing stuff with paid traffic.

If you have any sort of IM know-how and are able to grind away testing everything, you will at least break even. Then it's just a matter of focusing on what's making the most money.

Feel free to PM me if you need any help or point you in the right direction.

Good luck!

Out of curiosity what was your day job and the reason you were fired?

Marketing/advertising director for both online and offline for a local business. Was let go due to time issues I suppose? No real reason given.. Worked too hard at home to get things done affected my times from being over worked. Ended up working things out, they didn't deliver with promises and now they don't want to honor them, so they are hiring someone who's even cheaper than me.. Guy before me made $40K+ more a year, they are just taking advantage of it. Generated 4,000+ leads this year, cut expenses by $60K+, but the problem is when you have business owners who don't understand the internet or running a business, it's hard to get recognized by solely your performance.

I'm one of the best/top-performers and most educated/experienced people in my "niche" industry, no one can match what I do. I literally bleed creativity and run on a business mindset 24.7. They hired some immature kid who has no idea what he's doing, he's an avid Reddit fan too with no real business experience or social life. I checked into it, and they are really going to regret this, I can say for sure the business will struggle badly once I leave.

Good Luck on your newest adventure... :) Work hard, don't slack because it's really easy to slack.

You're not alone. I had a similar experience recently as a staff copywriter for about a year. During the last 6 weeks at the job I was promoted, demoted then booted from the company by a very young and pregnant manager prone to temper tantrums. Talk about getting jerked around! There isn't even any unemployment for me because I was being paid in direct deposits, business to business.

I was promised a long term position, two weeks' paid vacation, and even a free trip to Singapore for a company meeting. And what I got was kicked in the teeth. Never tie your hopes and dreams to the whims of an employer. They always say they want two weeks of notice from you, but they'll throw you out the door any time, any day. I regret not having worked harder on my own stuff while on staff. There's no such thing anymore as a "permanent" job anymore. We're all just freelancers here.

I'm now working on the first of my own offers, and it's almost done. Good thing I lived like a pauper while being paid well, meaning I have lots of money saved for graphics, traffic, etc.

I realize I'm going on and on about my experience, but just saying I know where you're coming from. Good luck, bro.

^^ I can for sure relate to this shit man.

Taking a trip down memory lane here, but I was in a very fucking similar situation about 3x times now. LOL

I got fired from my first "dream job" years ago when it was found out via the IT department that I had sent out 2 emails on the corporate internet connection to a partner of mine about some side work we were doing online. The company was Humana and my role was not IT or web related, but it was my first corporate job. I got fired over 2 fucking emails, no joke. Even though I was the only employee on my team that came in on time, left late, and worked every weekend I was asked. I even developed macro's for their outdated POS computer system that improved the claims and EOB's departments response time and claim completion time by over 400%. This wasn't even part of my job description.. I just seen a problem and fixed it myself which resulted in a ton of benefit to the company for free.

I got laid off my 2nd "dream job" ( my first web position ) when my owner didn't know how to run a fucking company. He was more interested in buying cell phones, t-shirts, and other BS shit for us then actually closing sales with customers and collecting payments. In turn, I brought revenue streams to the company they never had before like hosting, programming, marketing, and a working knowledge of online learning systems that we resold up until I got laid off. My shit alone brought in more then half the revenue for the company, but I get laid off when the "times got tough".

My next "dream job" abused the fact I had just got laid off from the above company, but at least it was more stable and had history behind it. I was getting paid $29k a year to build and manage 3 ecom websites that now help the company bring in over 20 million a year. I built those web sites myself, I built the CRM system myself, and I ranked those sites on Google/Yahoo/MSN too with our marketing director. I was also the tech support for the whole company. I was doing a job that now over 6-8 prople do. I left after 12 months when I asked for a raise and they told me they didn't have it in the budget to give me... but yet after 9 months of leaving they asked me to come back and I was able to "get the raise" now and also only work on online marketing ONLY instead of a cluster fuck of 90 IT/web dev/programming/marketing jobs.

I was happy at that job, although I needed more money. Out of nowhere my next "dream job" landed in my lap pretty much. I got offered a job in Toronto working with an affiliate marketing company, except I could work from home which was right up my fucking alley. I was now making almost 100k a year, fully paid for dental, health, and life insurance, working from home, and got to travel as well. This was a fucking DREAM job for me. So, what ended up happening? Well my boss and the upper management couldn't close deals with our SEM clients for more SEO/SEM work and the work we did have, my boss didn't collect a dime of the payments we should have received for months and months. We were doing free fucking work pretty much my time there.

The company closed my department down, moved me into some internal work where I was now an affiliate for the company and gave me only a few months to try it out before laying me off because "they were closing down offices" all while they were having a record banner year income wise off of Green Tea and Colon products ( which I made the sales process for myself).

After being laid off, I went into full time affiliate for myself and stayed that way for years. Oddly enough as time went by I connected with some of my old employers and actually got offered a pretty sweet position with the one I did ecom with. I went back to work for them after being self employed and did not turn out as expected. Before coming back to them, I needed to know some key information like costs of health insurance, working from home, and other important stuff which I was told 1 thing before I was hired.. but then ended up being different afterwards. 2 months after coming in, my health insurance pretty much doubled what I was originally told and after 12 months of bringing them to front page rankings and increasing their sales, I was told I could work from home 1 day a week which was not going to fly with me.

I promptly left and have been trying to figure out what I am going to do with my future, but one thing for sure.. there is no fucking dream "job" at all.

The dream is doing wtf you want to do.

Got fired in 2010 from a supposedly "entrepreneurial" company, the boss didnt like people running their own businesses on the side. (Despite promoting me with a pay rise a month previous ;))

Felt bad for like 5 seconds then I was like fuck yeah, I was too scared to quit so they did me a massive favour.

Been making money on my own since then, its hard but so much more satisfying than working for some douche who tells you "yeah you can really go places here" i.e. make 5% more next year...maybe.

Getting fired can be great if you are cut out for business on your own, just push through when you make $0 for the first month or whatever.

Sounds like you're a smart guy with the talent and potential to take your business to great heights. I agree with what others have said, just focus your time and energy on making your business a success and you will succeed.

Good luck!

You're in good company. I was fired and couldn't get a job to save my life. My wife and I started our company and matched my old salary within 4 months.

Joanna Lord from SEOMoz is friends with my wife. She was fired for starting a company on the side and landed her job at SEOmoz within 1 year making at least double (now more) than what she was making at job #1.

Just wanted to say thanks everyone, couldn't sleep tonight from the stress but after reading what everyone's posted I feel better than I did yesterday, so thank you.

Sounds like you are a bit frustrated at the moment..
Anyway , i hope this will bring some smile on that sad face..

From what you've said it sounds like they will regret their decision, and you're level-headed enough to make things work by yourself.

I was running a company for 4 years, until late last year, when I discovered my business partner was stealing money and getting clients/affiliates to pay him directly into his bank account. After weighing up my legal options I decided to resign and set up by myself.

Fortunately I can do everything that he brought to the table, but in his case he never handled the running of the business. Through the grapevine I have heard he is struggling massively whilst I've never been happier.

When I discovered what he was doing it was a bittersweet moment. On the one hand I felt angry at being betrayed, and on the other, I was glad I had the reason and the fuel to push me into doing what I really wanted to do.
