I'd like to know how some of you first heard about the field of affiliate marketing? for many, it appears like they first started out as computer programmers and were already exposed to this idea of using the internet as an outlet for commerce.

However, what if you are not a programmer? when did you first hear about affiliate marketing and what steps did you take that lead you to success?

I had a month off work after a surgery and plenty of free time. I found a link to a site called Wickedfire one night while surfing the net and clicked it because I thought the name was cool. That click literally changed my life.

I remember there was some old search engine, it might have been overture but im not sure. Was before google was around, or really known. Was buying signups for a hosting company I owned back in 1996. Ended up getting something insane over 5,000 signups per day. Started sending them to other companies (because there was no way I could handle that), and found I could do that for pretty much anything in high demand.

I think it was probably through amazon's program. I used to visit the anandtech hot deals forum a lot and noticed people putting aff codes in there links to some of the hot deals. So one time I tried posting a hot deal/pricing error at amazon using my affiliate id. I ended up making a couple thousand off that post and was hooked...

It was like 5 years ago, I was securing a guy's website and he asked me if I knew anything about setting up an affiliate program for his online store. I said no and decided to do some research, did some testing and got my first check a month later. It was like $60 but I knew there was potential for a lot more.

Another forum. Some guy bragged about his business and basically gave a step by step approach to what he did. I did some research, and wala- here I am, copying his entire business to the T. :)

Had a website for buying foreclosure properties in San Diego at the time of the hottest real estate market ever. Needless to say it didn't work to well so someone told me to put adsense on it and it started making some cash. 5 Adsense accounts bannings later I started learning about lead gen which led me to affiliate marketing. Haven't looked back sense.

Was at a freelance design forum (Talkfreelance I believe) and some guy was promoting Wickedfire trying to get referrals for the launch contest. I signed up just to help him out, but never bothered to look around and post. Few months later I checked the place out and decided to stay awhile. And here I am till this day, OG member since June 2006 but still a noobie to AM haha.

I read this forum, and then I go try stuff - and then awe when it works.

You need help on a subject, just search.

Through blogs. I believe it was on Problogger where I first heard about affiliate sales via Amazon. That could be around 2005. I didn't get involved in AM until 3 months ago.

I learned about affiliate marketing when I was given $25 by a company called X.com (now known as Paypal) for referring some friends to apply for the x.com online checking account.

I saw a credit card site for sale making $400/month. After some searching I found Quadzillas blog ( I was into blackhat/xss type stuff at the time). Then wickedfire from that.

I did some "secrets of the big dogs" mlm clickbank crap back in 2001.

It was totally a scam, but years later I look back and realize writing ads for that crap actually made me a decent copywriter.

the first hosting company I used had an affiliate program, I put their banners up and received a $195 check

after that I saw amazon had an affiliate program, I put their banners up, after 3 years and having run their banners several times I still have to earn my first cent with them
