How Do I Get Quality Graphic Banner Ads on My Site?

I'm looking to find out how to get quality advertisers on my site (not Google Adwords, etc.). I only want banner ads from reputable companies. What kind of user base do I need (if any)? Do I approach the advertisers directly when I approach said user level? Are there services that offer graphical banners from quality advertisers?
