How many of you have a family that you provide for through entrepreneurial efforts?

For those that do, what are some challenges that you've faced in maintaining a healthy relationship with your wife/husband and children? What level of support should be considered reasonable on both ends? Where should a line be drawn, on both ends?

I'd love to hear any personal examples of any tough situations you've had to navigate through in your relationships due to the oftentimes demanding requirements of running a business. Looking for a little perspective.

Whoa, I'll have to compose this one offsite, standby, how copy?

Get an office and go in every day. It's easy for you to compartmentalize and eliminate distractions, and it's easy for your family to understand when you are working and off limits and when you aren't.

Electrify the door handle to your office. Your kids will quickly learn no bugging dad when the door is closed.

My wife and I work together. It´s difficult sometimes to align our insights, needs and strategy, so it looks that it takes more time to make decisions, but results are great and gratifying.

As a matter of balance, we spread our businesses between offline design/consultancy services and building web sites for monetization/rental and so on. This way we always keep a foot into real world and children can see us with a suit going out for clients...

But when there is a problem or misunderstanding, we've to sort it out very quickly or both of us are screwed for an entire unproductive week!

I actually have a office which is fairly unused coz I usually work from home. Its a huge distraction for sure. About time, I move my ass back into the office.

At the same time, I kinda enjoy being around with my son.

Murder your wife and rape your kids.

Have a set work schedule every day. Stop working by 5pm (or whatever works for you). Explain to them that like any job, you're working during that time off.

When not working make the time to spend with family. I'm off to see family now (no wife and kids, but I still think it's solid advice, works for girlfriends, friends and other family too).

The daily 9-5 is a drag but they did get one thing right: leave the house at the same time every day and come back at the same time every day. And don't skip a day, because when you're setting all the rules, everything is a precedent...
