How do you reverse engineer the competition?

I've come across some stuff on the Internet that says one way to gain the top position on Google for your niche is to spy on your competitor and reverse engineer their site. Does anyone know where I can get specifics on how to do this, e.g., what software or sites to use? Thanks

The gist of it will be duplicating their backlinks.

Since yahopo site explorer shut up shop, its harder. Sites like ahrefs, majesticseo and opensiteexplorer (google them) offer a similar service, but you have to pay.

Lately all you have to do is search for their site in quotes to get started.

I.e if the domain is

http://google.com

I would just search "google.com" in quotes to quickly see if they are actively building links.

+1 for Ahrefs, You can do a quick backlink search on any site. I believe that if you sign up for a free account you get up to 5-10 Free searches per day.

SEO Spyglass is good for this and its free. Just check out their backlinks and it should give you a good gauge.
